L'Amour Vivant

DESCRIPTION:
Composer Sami Yusuf’s mastery of musical languages dazzles in ‘L’Amour Vivant’.
The initial movement unfolds within the intricate geometry of the Baroque style,
a form that was imprinted on the composer’s soul during his upbringing in London
and that remains a cherished inspiration. From the start we hear the subtle
meeting of musical paths in the Arabic baladi rhythm that underlies the graceful melody.
The transition into the second movement transports the listeners to the heart of Sami Yusuf’s
other musical heritage, immersing them in the Central Asian Azerbaijani world.
The third movement revisits the Baroque sound before incorporating
the rich tonalities and nuanced rhythms of the Middle East and Persia,
seamlessly blending them into a sweeping soundscape.
The meditative sounds of the West African kora and the sensuous tones of the Chinese erhu then follow.
The final movement acts as a love letter to the world classical traditions encapsulated here,
skillfully weaving together the myriad emotions experienced throughout this journey in sound.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is one of Sami Yusuf’s compositions from the second concert of his ‘When Paths Meet’ series.
It features The Sami Yusuf Ensemble, The Scoring Orchestra of Paris, The Métaboles,
and stellar soloists and specialist musicians in a stunning collaboration.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is classical crossover at its most innovative.
Performed at the Paris Philharmonic.

L’Amour Vivant – Sami Yusuf

The lyrics of this song come from the poetry of the 14th century mystical poet Nasimi, who was one of the first literary figures to compose in Azerbaijani. The composer sets an ecstatic mood in this new piece in Shur mugham that evokes Sufi ceremonies through high-energy percussion and dazzling avaz sections. The musical narrative is majestic, powerful, and intensely beautiful.

Məndə sığar iki cahan, mən bu cahana sığmazam,
The two worlds are contained in Me
But I will not be contained in these worlds
I cannot be contained in being or in the engendered world
Gövhəri-laməkan mənəm, kövnü məkana sığmazam
I am the Treasure* of no abode,
But I will not be contained in these worlds
Tir mənəm, kaman mənəm, pir mənəm, cavan mənəm
I am the arrow, I am the bow, I am the old, I am the young
Məndə sığar iki cahan, mən bu cahana sığmazam,
The two worlds are contained in Me
But I will not be contained in these worlds
Gövhəri-laməkan mənəm, kövnü məkana sığmazam.
I am the Treasure of no abode,
But I will not be contained in these worlds
Zərrə mənəm, günəş mənəm, çar ilə pəncü şeş mənəm,
I am the particles, I am the Sun
I am the Four**, and I am Five and the Six more***
Surəti gör bəyan ilə, çünki bəyana sığmazam.
See [the universe as] My face and describe it,
as I will not be contained in your description
Məndə sığar iki cahan, mən bu cahana sığmazam,
The two worlds are contained in Me
But I will not be contained in these worlds
Gövhəri-laməkan mənəm, kövnü məkana sığmazam
I am the Treasure of no abode,
I will not be contained in being or in the engendered world
Nara yanan şəcər mənəm, çərxə çıxan həcər mənəm
I am the burning bush, I am the rock that ascended to Heaven
Məndə sığar iki cahan, mən bu cahana sığmazam,
The two worlds are contained in Me,

Kövni-məkandır ayətim, zatidürür bidayətim,
Being and existence are the signs of My power,
My Eternity is in My Essence
Sən bu nişanla bil məni, bil ki, nişana sığmazam.

Eyni-əyan mənəm, mən uş,
I am the manifest, I am, My servant
Gövhəri-kan mənəm, mən uş,
I am the treasure mine, o My servant
Bəhrəvü kana sığmazam.

But I will not be contained in these worlds
Gənci-nihan mənəm mən uş,
I am the Hidden Treasure, o My servant,
Eyni-əyan mənəm, mən uş,
I am the manifest, I am, My servant
Gövhəri-kan mənəm, mən uş,
I am the treasure mine, o My servant
Bəhrəvü kana sığmazam.
But I cannot be contained in the oceans and mines.
Tir mənəm, kaman mənəm, pir mənəm, cavan mənəm,
I am the arrow, I am the bow, I am the old, I am the young
Dövləti-cavidan mənəm, ayinədana sığmazam.
I am the Treasure of no abode,
I will not be contained in being or in the engendered world
Gərçi bu gün Nəsimiyəm, haşimiyəm, qureyşiyəm,
Even though today I may be a Nasimi, a Hashimi, a Qurayshi
Məndən uludur ayətim, ayətə, şana sığmazam
From Me the signs of My power find existence,
But I will not be contained in My sign of power
sığmazam, sığmazam, sığmazam, sığmazam
I cannot be contained, I cannot be contained,
I will not be contained,
I cannot be contained
Həm sədəfəm, həm inciyəm, həşrü sirat əsinciyəm,
I am the shell, I am the kernel,
I am the upholder of the Doomsday and Suspender of the Bridge*****
Bunca qumaşü rəxt ilə mən bu dükana sığmazam.
So you make a robe out of this cloth for such a day,
For I will not be contained in your store,
Şəhd ilə həm şəkər mənəm, şəms mənəm, qəmər mənəm,
I am the sugar, I am the honey, I am the Sun, I am the Moon,
Ruhi-rəvan bağışlaram, ruhi-rəvana sığmazam.
I bestow spirit to all things, But I will not be contained in spirit
Məndə sığar iki cahan, mən bu cahana sığmazam,
The two worlds are contained in Me,
But I will not be contained in these worlds
Gövhəri-laməkan mənəm, kövnü məkana sığmazam
I am the Treasure of no abode,
I cannot be contained in being or in the engendered world
Mən bu cahana sığmazam
I will not be contained in these worlds

Lyrics:
Some might say this world today shows
God’s left us to our mistakes oh
He has never been
So far away
Some might say
How could any father stand
See his children across many lands
Suffer so and give no helping hand
No helping hand
Somewhere tonight
Far away and out of sight
There’s a child that’s too weak to cry
Hmmm
Deep in those eyes
Can’t you see him in disguise
Reaching out to the heart that’s in you
And I
In every tear
That is where
He is there
He’s the hand that wipes that brow
He’s the tear that trickles down
Upon the face that cries without a sound
We need you now
What a simple choice to make
Between what you give and what you take
When what you give
Such precious life could save, life could save
Somewhere inside
There’s a part of you that asks why
Would he leave so many so far behind
And deep in those eyes
Can’t you see Him in disguise
Reaching out to the heart that’s in you
And I…

The Persian Nightingale – Sami Yusuf

Lyrics:
Allahumma salli ‘ala,
Sayyidina,
Muhammadin an-Nabiyyi al-ummiyyi,
Wa ‘ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim.
(O Allah, send your peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad, the Unlettered Prophet, and upon his family and companions.)
O My Lord,
My sins are like
The highest mountain;
My good deeds
Are very few
They’re like a small pebble.
I turn to You
My heart full of shame,
My eyes full of tears.
Bestow Your
Forgiveness and Mercy
Upon me.
Ya Allah,
Send your peace and blessings
On the Final Prophet,
And his family,
And companions,
And those who follow him.

Lyrics:
JUST A LITTLE TIME
TILL I COME TO SHORE
SOMEWHERE THAT I’VE SEEN
BUT NEVER BEEN BEFORE
I AM DRIFTWOOD NOW
I AM HOMEWARD BOUND
PULL ME FROM THE SEA
SAVE WHAT’S LEFT OF ME
‘CAUSE I’M TIRED AND WORN
FROM THE TIDES AND STORMS
SO FORGIVE MY WRONGS
I AM DRIFTWOOD NOW
I AM HOMEWARD BOUND
PULL ME FROM THE SEA
SAVE WHAT’S LEFT OF ME
‘CAUSE I’M TIRED AND WORN
FROM THE TIDES AND STORMS
AND I’VE MADE MY PLANS
BACK ON DRYER LAND
SO FORGIVE MY WRONGS
(FARSI)
TO EY KHODAYE
OH LORD
ALAMA O ADAM
LORD OF THE WORLDS AND OF MANKIND
NEJATAM DEH
SAVE ME
AZ IN HAME GHAM
FROM ALL THIS SORROW
DAR KAAME TOOFAN
IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM

BERES BAR DADAM
PLEASE REACH OUT AND HELP ME

Medreseja Jonë (Our Madrasah) – Mesut Kurtis

DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed British composer Sami Yusuf brings the immensely popular
Moroccan folk song ‘Fiyyashiyya’ to a European audience in his stunning
new arrangement performed live at the Holland Festival.
An achingly eloquent solo improvisation on the Chinese erhu
by the world-renowned master Guo Gan opens the piece,
which then moves into a joyful call and response between Sami Yusuf
and the vocalists of Cappella Amsterdam. As the rhythm builds,
the Arabic lyrics sung by the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra
are answered in English by Cappella Amsterdam.
This innovative rendition captures the exuberant essence of
the North African folk sound just as it clearly captured the hearts
of the audience who are heard clapping and singing along.
Written by the Moroccan poet
Sidi Othman ibn Yahya Cherki (known as “Sidi Bahloul Cherki”) in the 17th century

Lyrics:
Malayalam Verse:
Jeevante nritham pole
Like the seasons of nature and life
Ororo poovum pullum neele
On your path to success, every plant and flower that acts as an umbrella
Theeratha kavyam theerpu
Life is like an eternal poem
Aa vinnil suryan porum
The Morning sun that shines your day
Ravakum tharajalam pookum
As well the stars that lit the sky for you
Kalathin thalam kelkan va
To let you hear the rhythm of life
Venal marum varsham peyyum
Come and witness the summer move aside for the rain to drop
Ushasandhyakalayi manasse padu
After the darkest night comes dawn
Thalarathe naam Thudaram yathra
so never back down and continue the journey
Hindi Verse:
Ye Subha Mein Ujala
This Brightness in the Morning
Ye Machalti Shaam Ka Roshan Tara
is like a glistening star on a fancy night
Kehta Hai Tu Bhi Aaa Jagmaga
that says “come and shine with me”
Ghani Hain Ye Rahen
The ways are thick
Judi Aise Jaise bahen
Combined as two arms
Manzil Pe tum gum Na ho Jana
Our point of destiny won’t be lost
Qadam Badha
Step Forward
Bulandi Pe Jaa
Reach the heights
Sapnay Tu Saja
Build all your dreams
Jalway tu Dikha
Come out in flying colors
Aman Ko Jaga
Bring peace
Ghamon Ko Bhula
Forget all the hardships

Qadam Badha (Single) – Hesham Abdul Wahab

DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘The Fire Within’ evokes the flame of love
that burns in the hearts of seekers everywhere.
This rich musical tapestry weaves together mystical strands of music and poetry
as it moves seamlessly from the aeolian sound of European choral music
to Andalusian modes to Middle Eastern scales.
Here we hear the voice of each tradition clearly articulated
as in an intricate conversation with one another.
Layer upon layer of melodies and rhythms serve to clarify the composer’s vision
and to lead the listener inward to a place of knowing beyond words.
Lyrics are drawn from mystical poets: Kaygusuz Abdal (Turkish lyrics),
Hildegard von Bingen (Latin lyrics),
Mansur ibn al-Hallaj and Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari (Arabic lyrics).
Performed by Cappella Amsterdam, The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra,

Lyrics:
Chorus:
Allahi Allah kiya karo
Dukh na kisee ko diya karo
Joh duniya ka malik hai
Nam usee ka liya karo
Allahi Allah
(Say always in remembrance Allah O Allah
Do not give anyone sorrow or despair
For He is the sovereign king of the whole world
Take only His name
Allah O Allah)
Just like a sunrise
Can’t be denied no
Just like the river
Will find the sea
O Allah, you’re here
And You’re always near
And I know without a doubt
That You always hear my prayer
Chorus
So many bright stars
Like diamonds in the sky, Oh
It makes me wonder
How anyone can be blind
To all the signs so clear
Just open your eyes
And I know without a doubt
You will surely see the light
Theri hi dunya
Theri zameen
Yeh kahekashan hai
Thu hai Karim
Mere….Maula
Sunle dhua
Hum bebas hain
There bina
Roshan kar jahan
(This is your world
This is your earth
This is your sky
You are generous
My Lord, hear my prayer
We are helpless without you
Illuminate the earth)
Chorus

Ayın ışığı kıskanır seni
Sen ümmete anne oldun nebiye sevgili
Aişe, yoldaşın senin habibin Resulullah
Hidayetinle müjdeler seni
Kelamın nuru sardı kutlu ilmini
Senin gibi sadık bir kalbi görmedi dünya
Aişe, sen Aişe Ümmetin kalbindesin
Kelamın nuruna şehadet edenlerdensin
Kalbi pak olan, zikri hak olan
Resule sevgili sensin
İlmindedir senin kerametin
Mü’minlere lider oldu ferasetin
Aişe, rehberin senin habibin Resulallah
Güzel ahlak senin emanetin
Şehadetinin gölgesinde sen hidayeti
Buldun, her bir ayeti eyledin yoldaş
Aişe, sen Aişe Ümmetin kalbindesin
Kelamın nuruna şehadet edenlerdensin
Kalbi pak olan, zikri hak olan
Resule sevgili sensin

Lyrics/Söz: Resül’e Aşk:
Bu özlem kalbin hicretidir
هذا الشوق الذي يملأ قلبي سببه الفراق لك
This longing filling me is caused by separation from you
Sana vuslat bana hasret
الفراق عَنَى لك الوصول لمبتغاك، وعَنَى لي الحسرة والألم
Separation meant for you reaching your ultimate goal [God], but for me it meant regret and pain
Mesafeler misafirdir
المسافات التي بيننا هي ضيف مؤقت
These distances between us are transient guests
Gözümdeki yaş diner elbet
لذا أعلم أن دموعي المُهرَاقة ستتوقف يومًا ما
That is why I know that my flowing tears will stop one day
Ya Resulallah (Ey Allah’ın Resulü)
يا رسولَ الله
O Messenger of God
Ya Habiballah (Ey Allah’ın Sevgilisi)
يا حبيبَ الله
O Beloved of God
Ya İmamena (Ey imamımız)
يا إمامَنا
O our leader (Imam)
Ya Muhammed (Ey Muhammed)
يا محمد
O Muhammad!
Turkish: Sallallahu aleyke ve sallam (Salat ve selam üzerine olsun)
صلى الله عليك وسلم
May God’s peace & blessings be upon you
Ya Resulallah (Ey Allah’ın Resulü)
يا رسولَ الله
O Messenger of God

Ya Muhammed (Ey Muhammed)
يا محمد
O Muhammad!
Sallallahu aleyke ve sallam (Salat ve selam üzerine olsun)
صلى الله عليك وسلم
May God’s peace & blessings be upon you
Gönülde merhameti Senle
تعلَّمَ قلبي الرحمةَ منكَ
My heart learned from you how to be merciful
Ben aşkı Senden öğrendim
والحبُّ أيضا درسٌ تعلمتُه منك
Love is another lesson I learned from you
Adın anmak bile çare
ذِكر اسمِك كافٍ لشفاء قلبي
Mentioning your name enough to heal my heart
Seninle deva bulur derdim
في ذِكرك أجدُ الدواء لكل داء بداخلي
In your remembrance I find the cure for all the ills inside me
Senin aşkındadır ihsan
فى عشقكَ أنتَ وجدتُ الإحسان
In your love, I found benevolence
Ki hakka çağırdın zikrile Sen
لأنك دعَوتَنا للحق ذاكراً لله
For you called us to the Truth while you were engaged in the remembrance of God
Yoksan, ruh kalır noksan
في غيابك تشعُر أرواحُنا بالنقص والضياع
In your absence our souls feel lost and incomplete
Şefaatinle bizi müjdele Sen
شفاعتُكَ هي البُشرى التي نتوق إليها
Your intercession is the glad tidings we long for

Resul’e Aşk (sav) (Messenger of Love ﷺ) – Ali Magrebi

Sous ses draps blancs je les entend
Tous ses cries des larmes parents
Qui viennent pleurer leur unique enfant
Le hasard est venu pour moi
Ne me demandez pas pourquoi
Il frappe toujours soudainement
Mon cœur s’arrête tout doucement
Je n’entends plus ses battements
Le temps s’arrête fatalement
Pourquoi faut-il tant de larmes
Pourquoi faut-il tant de drames
Il est temps de poser les armes
Ma vie a-t-elle été accomplie?
Ma vie a-t-elle été bien remplie?
Maintenant il est vraiment trop tard
Je suis tout prêt du grand départ
Pourquoi les hommes meurent?
Pourquoi les hommes pleurent?
Pourquoi tant de malheurs?
Pourquoi avoir tant peur?
Prions tous ensemble mes frères
Pour atteindre la blanche lumière
Pour suivre enfin le droit chemin
Pour accomplie notre destin
Pourquoi les hommes meurent?
Pourquoi les hommes pleurent?
Pourquoi tant de malheurs?
Pourquoi avoir tant peur?
Prions alors tous mes frères
Pour atteindre la lumière
Donne nous du bonheur à nos prochains
Guidons leurs pas main par la main
Père maintenant, il est l’heure
Personne ne me l’avait prédit
On me descend tout doucement
A dieu à vous tous mes frères
On me recouvre de cette terre
Alors, je repose tout seule
Enfin, c’est le temps du deuil
Pourquoi les hommes meurent?
Pourquoi les hommes pleurent?
Pourquoi tant de malheurs?
Pourquoi avoir tant peur?
Prions tous ensemble mes frères
Pour atteindre la blanche lumière

Lyrics:
(Translation and transliteration)
Jhulati Hai Jhoola – She is swinging like a swing
Mamta Ki Chaya – The shadow of her love
Maa Ka Dulara – Falls upon her loving son
Jaga Muskaya – Waking up with a smile
Sundar Tha – It was beautiful
Sapna Sa Tha – It was like a dream
Soya Tha Usi Or – As I slept on that spot
Jahan Meri Maa Ke Thi God – Where is my mother’s lap
Dheeray Say Mujh Ko Sula De Meri Maa – Let me sleep again slowly oh mom
Paas Tu Jo Naa Rahe To – If you are not staying with me
Siskiyan Le Kar Mein Ro Dun – I would weap a lot and cry
Maa Mujhe Aa Ke To de do Hosla – Please come and give me courage
Sehla Day – Stroke me
Behla Day – Disperse me
Seenay Say Mujh Ko Laga Lay – Hug me
Wohi Lory, Gaa Phir Se – The same song, sing it again
Nindiya Ko Tu Jaga Day – Wake me up again
Dheeray Se Mujh Ko Sula De – Let me sleep again slowly oh mom
Meri Maa – My Mom
Meri Maa – My Mom
Jhulati Hai Jhoola – She is swinging like a swing
Mamta Ki Chaya – The shadow of her love
Maa Ka Dulara – Falls upon her loving son
Jaga Muskaya – Waking up with a smile
Sukh Mein Dukh Mein Jo Sath Thee – In happiness & sadness she was near
Palak Jhapaktay hi Ko Gayiii – Disappeared in seconds
Lamha Lamha Jo Paas Thee – Every moment she was with me
Door Mujh Se Ho Gayii – Going far away from me
Saza Se Bhi Hai Ye Zyada – This is more than a punishment
Teray Bin Ik Pal Jeeena – Living a second without you
Amma – mother
Amma- mother
Amma – mother

Lyrics:
I open up my heart just to you my Lord
I’m here all alone
It’s dark and cold
I think that I’m lost
Would you guide me home?
My heart’s broken
Wash away my tears
And set me free from this prison of fears
When I call you all the fires cease
And I feel your love in a holy breeze
Allah Ya Allah Ya Allah
Allah Ya Allah Ya Allah
Persian Part:
یا رب بر قلب کویر من تو ببار
توی صحرای دل من گاهی گل عشقی بکار
توی طوفان غم و اندوهم
تو نگاهم کن تو امانم باش
رها بخش همه احوال و سروسامان دو جهانم باش

The Power Lyrics:-
Masisondele, masisondele haha phila nocolo yelele
(Let us draw nearer to perfect peace in life)
Subhan’Allah, walhamdu lillah
(Glory be to Allah, and all praise be to Allah
La ilaha illa Allah, wa’Allahu Akbar
There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest)
You can say it once
Or a hundred times or more
You’ll feel at peace inside
And it’ll open every door
Chorus:
That’s the power of remembering Allah
It’s the best way to purify your heart
And know you will be loved by the Merciful One
‘Cause that’s the power of remembering Allah
Subhan’Allah, walhamdu lillah
(Glory be to Allah, and all praise be to Allah
La ilaha illa Allah, wa’Allahu Akbar
There is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest)
So much you can gain
Just by saying those few words
You can renew your faith
And be showered in rewards
CHORUS
La ilaha illa Allah (x3)
(There is no god but Allah)
Subhan’Allah, walhamdu lillah wa’Allahu Akbar
(Glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest)
Masisondele kuy’uAllah
(We obey You Allah)
Ngokukhulu ukuzithoba
(With submission, we humble ourselves before You)
Sizothol’ ukuphila Noxolo
(So we may find peace and happiness)
CHORUS
Subhan’Allah, walhamdu lillah
