When paths meet (Live at the Holland Festival)
أناشيد الألبوم
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

Veritas (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
‘Karitas’ is a spellbinding new composition by acclaimed British musician Sami Yusuf.
It was recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022 and delivered with
exceptional artistry by Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra & the composer’s own ensemble.
The work moves with intelligence and fluidity from Western choral music
to Middle Eastern modes to the cadence of Andalusia.
Modes traverse boundaries from the distinctive Bayati Shiraz
and Rast maqams to the aeolian. Subtly flowing rhythms & improvisation,
entrancing solos on the Chinese erhu, oud, ney, violin,
underscore the depth of the dialogue among traditions taking place here.
Lyrics by Fuzuli, a 16th c. Azerbaijani writer known as a poet of divine love,
are echoed here in the words of the 12th c. German mystic Hildegard of Bingen.
Intoxicatingly beautiful mawwals take verses from
the Andalusian poet Abul Hasan al-Shushtari (13th c.) and
Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi, a 17th c. Syrian writer.

DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed British composer Sami Yusuf brings the immensely popular
Moroccan folk song ‘Fiyyashiyya’ to a European audience in his stunning
new arrangement performed live at the Holland Festival.
An achingly eloquent solo improvisation on the Chinese erhu
by the world-renowned master Guo Gan opens the piece,
which then moves into a joyful call and response between Sami Yusuf
and the vocalists of Cappella Amsterdam. As the rhythm builds,
the Arabic lyrics sung by the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra
are answered in English by Cappella Amsterdam.
This innovative rendition captures the exuberant essence of
the North African folk sound just as it clearly captured the hearts
of the audience who are heard clapping and singing along.
Written by the Moroccan poet
Sidi Othman ibn Yahya Cherki (known as “Sidi Bahloul Cherki”) in the 17th century

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

Experience the beauty and unity of diverse musical traditions with Sami Yusuf’s
latest release, ‘One.’ Recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022,
this piece showcases exceptional artistry from Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, and Sami Yusuf’s own ensemble.
Composed and arranged by Sami Yusuf,
‘One’ is a stunning blend of Western European vocal performance and the dynamic
rhythms of Andalusian, North African and Middle Eastern instruments including the ney,
violin, qanun, santur and percussions.
The German words by Meister Eckhart and Arabic poetry by Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari
speak of the Eternal I and the unity of vision, emphasising the separate beauty of
each path and their underlying unity.
Performed in E Flat with allusions to maqām Nahāwand,
‘One’ opens with Cappella Amsterdam’s hauntingly beautiful vocals,
transitioning to the richly textured and dynamic rhythms of Amsterdam
Andalusian Orchestra, culminating in a mesmerising santur and percussion performance
by Sami Yusuf’s ensemble.

Lyrics:
Allahumma salli ‘ala,
Sayyidina,
Muhammadin an-Nabiyyi al-ummiyyi,
Wa ‘ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim.
(O Allah, send your peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad, the Unlettered Prophet, and upon his family and companions.)
O My Lord,
My sins are like
The highest mountain;
My good deeds
Are very few
They’re like a small pebble.
I turn to You
My heart full of shame,
My eyes full of tears.
Bestow Your
Forgiveness and Mercy
Upon me.
Ya Allah,
Send your peace and blessings
On the Final Prophet,
And his family,
And companions,
And those who follow him.

And yet both East and West in Its Light unites.

Neredesin – Lyrics:
Ben ararken sende buldum kendimi
insanlığın, dert eyledim derdini
Işığınla aydınlıktır her yanım
Uğruna olsun feda bu canım, canım
Yüreğimi sardı yine hüzün
Gidişin var ya hep boğulu gözüm
Senle var oldu özüm
Senle hayat bulur sözüm
Neredesin, nerede o gülen yüzün
Dünya fani her şey bomboş ve yalan
Nefsim derki, sefani sür oyalan
Bitsin rüya artik uykudan uyan
Feryadımı yokmu duyan gel uyan
Yüreğimi sardı yine hüzün
Gidişin var ya hep boğulu gözüm
Senle var oldu özüm
Senle hayat bulur sözüm
Neredesin, nerede o gülen yüzün
Gel yetiş imdadıma
Merhem ol yaralarıma
Sen ümit ışığımsın
Bir tek gönlümü sana bağlamışım

Lyrics:
What do you see?
Tell me what do you taste?
Tell me what do you hear
when I whisper your name?
You see through my eyes
and turned me away
In madness you’d spiral
if I did the same
Oh my love I’m waiting
Oh my love I’m calling
Oh my love I’m yearning
I shine but you’re
Shadowless, no you don’t see me
Shadowless, bright as I can be
Shadowless, no you don’t see me
I shine but you’re
Shadowless no you don’t see me
Shadowless bright as I can be
Shadowless no you don’t see me
I shine but you’re
Shadowless
Memories you took
like grapes off the vine
In citrus, in sweetness
with you all the time
You tasted my love
and turned me away
Your tears would make oceans
if I did the same
Shadowless, no you don’t see me
Shadowless, bright as I can be
Shadowless, no you don’t see me
I shine but you’re
Shadowless no you don’t see me
Shadowless bright as I can be
Shadowless no you don’t see me
I shine but you’re
Shadowless
Shadowless
Shadowless
I shine but you’re
Shadowless
Shadowless
Shadowless
I shine but you’re
(I know) you think don’t see me
(I know) you think don’t hear me,
(Tell me) If you ever need me
Know that my love is
Limitless, Boundless, Waiting there for you
(I know) you think don’t see me

LYRICS :
I praise Allah for sending me you my love
You’ve found your home it’s here with me, and I’m here with you
Now let me let you know
You’ve opened my heart
I was always thinking that love was wrong
But everything was changed when you came along, oh
And there’s a couple of words I want to say
Chorus:
For the rest of my life, I’ll be with you
I’ll stay by your side, honest and true
Till the end of my time, I’ll be loving you, loving you
For the rest of my life, through days and nights
I’ll thank Allah for opening my eyes
Now and forever I, I’ll be there for you
I know it deep in my heart
I feel so blessed when I think of you
And I ask Allah to bless all we do
You’re my wife, and my friend and my strength
And I pray we’re together in Jannah
Finally now I’ve found my self, I feel so strong
Yes everything was changed when you came along, oh
And there’s a couple of words I want to say
Chorus
And now that you’re here, in front of me
I strongly feel love
And I have no doubt, and I’ll sing it loud
And that I will love you eternally
Chorus

Lyrics:
YOU SET ME FREE
HELPED ME TO SEE
OF EVERY GIFT YOU GAVE TO ME
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
(URDU)
AYE SANAM NOORI
OH MY EFFULGENT BELOVED
TUJSE KAISEE DOOREE
WHY SHOULD THERE BE A DISTANCE
JENE KO TEREE
TO LIVE ALL IS SUFFICIENT
ROSHANEE ZAROORE
THE NEED OF YOUR LIGHT
PLEASE SHOW ME,
YOUR MERCY
YOU CAN TAKE THE STARS FROM THE SKIES ABOVE
YOU CAN TAKE THE SEAS, THE AIR I BREATHE, YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOU CAN TAKE THE SUN, THE EARTH BENEATH, ‘CAUSE YOU’RE THE ONE I NEED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOU SPOKE TO ME
GAVE ME BELIEF
SURROUNDED IN A WORLD OF GREED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
(PERSIAN)
LAHSEHA PAYA PAY
MOMENTS, ONE AFTER ANOTHER
TAY MISHE DAMA DAM
PASS ONE BY ONE
MIRESE VAKHTE
REACHES THE TIME
DIDAR KAM KAM, DIDAR KAM KAM
TO SLOWLY MEET, TO SLOWLY MEET
PLEASE SHOW ME
YOUR MERCY
YOU CAN HAVE THE STARS FROM THE SKIES ABOVE
YOU CAN HAVE THE SEAS, THE AIR I BREATHE, YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
TAKE AWAY THE SUN, THE EARTH BENEATH, YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOU SET ME FREE
HELPED ME TO SEE
OF EVERY GIFT YOU GAVE TO ME
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
(TURKISH)
VURGUNUM SANA
STRUCK ON YOU
ASLA VAZGECMEM
I WOULD NEVER GIVE UP (LOVING YOU)
KALBIMDE SEN VARSIN
YOU ARE THE ONE IN MY HEART
ASKINDAN DONMEM
I CAN’T TURN AWAY FROM YOUR LOVE
ASLA TERK ETMEM
NEVER COULD I ABANDON YOU
PLEASE SHOW ME
YOUR MERCY
YOU CAN HAVE THE STARS FROM THE SKIES ABOVE
YOU CAN HAVE THE SEAS, THE AIR I BREATHE, YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOU CAN HAVE THE SUN, THE EARTH BENEATH, YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
PLEASE SHOW ME, YOUR MERCY
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
‘CAUSE YOUR LOVE IS ALL I NEED
TO BE ALL I CAN BE
AND I KNOW THAT YOU CAN SEE
HOW MUCH YOU MEAN TO ME
