When paths meet (Live at the Holland Festival)
DESCRIPTION:
Experience the beauty and unity of diverse musical traditions with Sami Yusuf’s
latest release, ‘One.’ Recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022,
this piece showcases exceptional artistry from Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, and Sami Yusuf’s own ensemble.
Composed and arranged by Sami Yusuf,
‘One’ is a stunning blend of Western European vocal performance and the dynamic
rhythms of Andalusian, North African and Middle Eastern instruments including the ney,
violin, qanun, santur and percussions.
The German words by Meister Eckhart and Arabic poetry by Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari
speak of the Eternal I and the unity of vision, emphasising the separate beauty of
each path and their underlying unity.
Performed in E Flat with allusions to maqām Nahāwand,
‘One’ opens with Cappella Amsterdam’s hauntingly beautiful vocals,
transitioning to the richly textured and dynamic rhythms of Amsterdam
Andalusian Orchestra, culminating in a mesmerising santur and percussion performance
by Sami Yusuf’s ensemble.
‘One’ invites you to experience the oneness of the human spirit in art.

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

I Only Knew Love (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘The Fire Within’ evokes the flame of love
that burns in the hearts of seekers everywhere.
This rich musical tapestry weaves together mystical strands of music and poetry
as it moves seamlessly from the aeolian sound of European choral music
to Andalusian modes to Middle Eastern scales.
Here we hear the voice of each tradition clearly articulated
as in an intricate conversation with one another.
Layer upon layer of melodies and rhythms serve to clarify the composer’s vision
and to lead the listener inward to a place of knowing beyond words.
Lyrics are drawn from mystical poets: Kaygusuz Abdal (Turkish lyrics),
Hildegard von Bingen (Latin lyrics),
Mansur ibn al-Hallaj and Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari (Arabic lyrics).
Performed by Cappella Amsterdam, The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra,

The Fire Within (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed British composer Sami Yusuf brings the immensely popular
Moroccan folk song ‘Fiyyashiyya’ to a European audience in his stunning
new arrangement performed live at the Holland Festival.
An achingly eloquent solo improvisation on the Chinese erhu
by the world-renowned master Guo Gan opens the piece,
which then moves into a joyful call and response between Sami Yusuf
and the vocalists of Cappella Amsterdam. As the rhythm builds,
the Arabic lyrics sung by the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra
are answered in English by Cappella Amsterdam.
This innovative rendition captures the exuberant essence of
the North African folk sound just as it clearly captured the hearts
of the audience who are heard clapping and singing along.
Written by the Moroccan poet
Sidi Othman ibn Yahya Cherki (known as “Sidi Bahloul Cherki”) in the 17th century

DESCRIPTION:
‘Karitas’ is a spellbinding new composition by acclaimed British musician Sami Yusuf.
It was recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022 and delivered with
exceptional artistry by Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra & the composer’s own ensemble.
The work moves with intelligence and fluidity from Western choral music
to Middle Eastern modes to the cadence of Andalusia.
Modes traverse boundaries from the distinctive Bayati Shiraz
and Rast maqams to the aeolian. Subtly flowing rhythms & improvisation,
entrancing solos on the Chinese erhu, oud, ney, violin,
underscore the depth of the dialogue among traditions taking place here.
Lyrics by Fuzuli, a 16th c. Azerbaijani writer known as a poet of divine love,
are echoed here in the words of the 12th c. German mystic Hildegard of Bingen.
Intoxicatingly beautiful mawwals take verses from
the Andalusian poet Abul Hasan al-Shushtari (13th c.) and
Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi, a 17th c. Syrian writer.

Karitas (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

Fire:
Throughout history humankind has always been drawn to fire; it provides warmth,
protection and a place to gather. It is the a symbol of community where ‘it
warms from every side’ regardless of who we are or what we do. The Fire has a meditative
quality where we can gather our thoughts, talk to our friends & make new ones.
Even the most solitary journeys require the help of others at times and The Fire is
a place where we can find that help.
—
lyrics:
Peace be with you my brother, my friend
Come join me at the fire, once again
It bears no judgement, shame or pride
It warms from every side
Its light is lost without your eyes
Come join me at the fire
Peace be with you my sister, my friend
The fire’s waiting for you to come again
When you need comfort from tears you’ve cried
It dances by your side
It needs a partner, so dry your eyes
Come join me at the fire
Let it burn your troubles, clear your mind
Watch these embers, sparks will fly
Let it draw you closer, guide your soul
Free your struggle in ash and smoke
As one with others in search of truth
Sisters, brothers, it waits for you
Find your place at the fire, my friends
Peace be with you my brother, my friend
Peace be with you my sister, my friend
Come join me at the fire, once again
Come join me at the fire, once again

Lyrics:
I’ve been dreaming of this world
Won’t you come along and dream with me?
It’s picture-perfect in my mind
Oh how I wish it would be real, oh real
No one living on the streets or digging for a bite to eat,
And pain and hunger are nothing, nothing but a memory
Let’s dream to make it real
Chorus:
Dream your biggest dream
If we dream enough together we can make it real
And lend a helping hand
What we keep won’t mean anything, once we’re gone
No abandoned women, struggling hard trying to make ends meet
No more missing fathers for their sons to be left all alone crying
Elders and children are all cared for lovingly
No one falling through the cracks of government bureaucracy
Let’s dream to make it real
CHORUS
Too many times I’ve walked through these streets
Wondering where we went wrong
Our hands alone can feel so helpless and weak
But surely with yours they’ll be strong
Our problems and fears will soon disappear
If we try hard enough they’ll all be gone
Brothers and sisters, it takes each of us
Together we can overcome!
We shall overcome
CHORUS

As brothers and sisters come together
Go to the mosque and pray together
Standing side by side
We celebrate from morning to night
May your eid be warm and bright
Time to reflect and evaluate
And thank Allah for this life
Today is the celebration
A day we forgive and forget
Ya Allah we seek forgiveness
For the days we’ve been misstepped
Today all the families smile
All around the world tonight
We fasted we prayed we cried
In your ayes we pray that we shine
Eid Mubarak

Lyrics:
I hear the flowers kind of crying loud
The breeze is sounding sad, oh no
Tell me when did we become so cold and empty inside
Lost our way long time ago
Did we really turn that blind?
We don’t see that we keep hurting each other no
All we do is just fight
Now we share the same bright sun
The same round moon
Why don’t we share the same love?
Tell me why not
Life is shorter than most had thought
Chorus:
Hold my hand
There are many ways to do it right
Hold my hand
Turn around and see what we’ve left behind
Hold my hand my friend
We could save the good spirit in me and you
For another chance
And let’s pray for the beautiful world
The beautiful world I share with you
Children seem like they’ve lost their smile
On the new bloody play grounds, oh no
How could we ignore heart breaking crying sounds
And we’re still going on like nobody really cares
And we just stopped feeling all the pain we cause
Like it’s a daily basic affair
Now we share the same bright sun
The same round moon
Why don’t we share the same love?
Tell me why not
Life is shorter than most had thought
Chorus
No matter how far I might be
I’m always going to be your neighbour
There’s only one small planet where to be
So I’m always going to be your neighbour
We cannot hide, we can’t deny
That we’re always going to be neighbours
Your neighbour, my neighbour, we’re neighbours
Chorus

LYRICS:
The high heavens exalt Your Name,
from which all names take their grace.
Timeless glories mark out Your reign,
from Your lofty dwelling place.
Understanding, bounteous One,
eternal gift of plenty;
omniscient, just and divine,
our Judge in all Your glory.
You give breeze to the wheeling birds
Sustained high up in the sky,
as You nurture us here on earth.
In Your warmth we glorify.
You sent messengers to us, Lord,
Revealing Your word and light.
You taught the scale above the sword,
Your justice is all men’s right.
We seek the mercy of God.
I beg, Prophet, speak for me!
Led by Mohammed’s great banner,
Your forgiveness is my plea.

“By My Side” Lyrics:-
Sometimes I can’t see
Where I’m supposed to go
Sometimes I speed up,
When I should take it slow
But through all my hard times
When I lose my way
You’re concealing my mistakes, yeah!
Pre-Chorus:
I know You’re always by my side
Never turning out Your light
When I need You most Your stars will shine
Chorus:
When I’m out there in the darkest place
Worn and tired
I can still see You illuminate
All my skies
When it feels like I’ve fallen too far from You
There You, there You, there You are
Guiding me through
Whenever I feel down
You can lift me up
Turning my life around
With Your love
No matter how rough it gets
I can wear a smile
‘Cause Your mercy never dries
I know You’re always by my side
Never turning out Your light
When I need You most Your stars will shine
PRE-CHORUS & CHORUS
Ain’t nobody, no no nobody
That knows me like You do
Ain’t nobody who makes me feel this way
Got no worries, no no worries
About anything
Cause I know You’re always there, oh

Lyrics:
I know your troubled story
A tale that’s full of sadness and woe
But I believe you’ll smile again
You see I know the pain you’re feeling
‘Cause I was there just like you before
And I know where it’s leading
Chorus:
Hold on ..
There’s nothing standing in your way you can
Be strong ..
So show the world what you can do and just
Walk on ..
Don’t ever doubt the inner voice in you
Life’s long ..
They’ll live to see what you’ve become
You feel like you’re the outcast
Sometimes it’s better to be alone
Than to be with the bad crowd
Preserve your mind and feed it
Nourish what it is you have inside
Use it in the right way
Chorus
Nothing standing in your way
Show the world what you can do
Don’t doubt the voice that’s in you
They’ll live to see what you’ve become

Lyrics:
Ya Allah
You’re the only lord of the worlds
Ya Allah
Your mercy and protection we yearn
Ya Allah
There is no might or power but You
Help us on the path to see the truth as true
Ya Allah
We love prophet Muhammad and kin
Ya Allah
Send Your peace and blessings on him
Ya Allah
We need Your grace to make it through
We raise our hands up high and we call onto You
Ya Allah
Our ummah is in so much pain
Ya Allah
Send Your mercy down like rain
Ya Allah
There is nobody greater than You
Help us heal the world and make it feel brand new
Ya Allah
When we ask we know You are near
Ya Allahu-
akbar, and we’ll have no fear
Ya Allah
We have nobody else but You
Anything is possible with kun-faya-koon
Ya Allah
Your promise is with hardship comes ease
Ya Allah
You are the source and from You comes peace
Ya Allah
Take care of the oppressed and the weak
Save them and protect them and fulfill their needs
Ya Allah
Give them food and keep them brave
Ya Allah
Send water and keep them safe
Ya Allah
We call upon your beautiful name
We’re begging for your mercy ‘cause we feel their pain
Ya Allah
Ya Rahman
Ya Raheem
Ya Kareem
Ya Allah
Help us fight the evil within
Ya Allah
With Your help we know we will win
Ya Allah
Our hope in You is firm and strong
You promise when we ask that You will answer our call
Ya Allah

Starting on the 11th of July 1995, the Srebrenica massacre cost the lives of 8372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys,
the worst war crime to take place on European soil since the Second World War.

Lyrics |
Hold my hand and don’t let go
Mamma, I love you so
They’re taking me away, I don’t wanna go
Mamma, pray for my soul
I don’t know what I’ve done wrong
And why they hate me so
Don’t forget me
Chorus
Srebrenica
You’ll always be in my heart
Srebrenica, I won’t forget
Standing side by side, waiting to die
This fear, it can’t be described
Every minute felt like years, as we stood in line
While tears flowed from my eyes
I don’t know what I’ve done wrong
And why they hate me so
Don’t forget me
CHORUS
You discriminate
Against my faith and my name
Stop spreading your hate
We are all the same
We are all the same
CHORUS
I will never forget

As we sail, across the sea of life
So much pain, warring divides
It’s a shame; we don’t see how it can be
CHORUS
Oh we need to smile at each other
Reach for your brother
Help one another, all/what we need is love
Oh we need to honour our mothers
Shelter our sisters
Alter existence, God’s help will come from up above
But, First we need the love
All the games people playing now
Fuel the flames, hatred devours
Lets spark a change, that’s within all of us
CHORUS (x2)

i am in the birds
i am in the trees
from the brown branches
to the the green leaves
im colorful

i touch all
indiscriminate
breed compassion and sentiment
limitless in my power to heal
the hearts of men
but they are so forgetful
that’s why i remind on an instrumental
this life is a trial
can never the let the test effect your smile
reach for your brother go the extra mile
kiss for ya mother hug your sister let your wife know that you miss her
know that you can never give up
when you fall to the floor im the reason you must get up
love
im a blessing from God
So why you dont use me more is so odd

Lyrics /
Verse 1:
Chorus:
Chorus:
Lyrics /
Verse 1:
Chorus:
Chorus:

Lyrics:
O Allah the Almighty
Protect me and guide me
To your love and mercy
Ya Allah don’t deprive me
From beholding your beauty
O my Lord accept this plea
Wo tanha kaun hai
Badshah wo kaun hai
Meherban wo kaun hai
Kya unchi shan hai
Uskey sab nishan hai
Sab dilon ki jan hai
Affeder günahı
Alemin padişahı
Yüreklerin felahı
İşit Allah derdimi bu ahlarımı
Rahmeyle bağışla günahlarimi
Hayır eyle hem akşam hem sabahlarımı

Oohh… Oohh.
Oh you, Came in to this life
Brought up as an orphan child
Through a time of deep despair, O Muhammad!
Your days at work began
As a fair and honest man
You showed just how much you cared
And one night in that cave
When the Archangel came
And your life in this world
Would never be the same
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
Your light is always showing me the way
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
I’m longing for the day I see your face
Oohh.
You brighten up my day
Oohh.
And in my heart you’ll stay
Ooh.
With every breath I take
Oohh…
I’ll never leave your way
Eyes that could light up any soul
You became the Chosen One
To proclaim the world of God, O Muhammad!
In the brightness of the Sun
Or the Stillness of the night
You would never ever stop
Being kind, Giving Hope
And serenity and love
To a divided world
That didn’t have enough
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
Your light is always showing me the way
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
I’m longing for the day I see your face
Oohh.
You brighten up my day.
Oohh.
And in my heart you’ll stay
Ooh.
With every breath I take
Oohh…
I’ll never leave your way
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
Peace be upon you
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
I really love you
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
Peace be upon you
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah …
Rasool’Allah, Habib’Allah
Your light is always showing me the way

Bardh e Zi
Hape zemrën tënde t’paster
Jetën plotë ngjyra jeto
Atë që Zoti t’ka dhuruar
Mos e nënvlerso
Ti ke më shumë seç’ meriton
Prapë i uritur je
Do ngopesh vetëm at’herë
Kur t’mbulojnë me dhe
JETA S’ËSHTË BARDH E ZI
SIÇ E SHEH TI
SHIH GJITHNJË ME ZEMËR
JO VETËM ME SY
Për cfarë je kokëulur
Sillesh si i mjerë
Kjo botë ska të dytë
Jetohet vetëm njëherë
Pikë shprese nga shpirti yt
Të pikoj në jetë
Të ka fal kurdoherë

So Real – Lyrics:
They say that love never lasts
That love never lives to see another day
But what I know deep down inside
It’s what I feel and it’s so real
I gave it up all for You
And there ain’t nothing that I won’t do
All I know deep down inside
It’s what I feel and it’s so real with You!
Chorus:
Allah, everyday I’ll try to be as true as I can to You
‘Cause loving You the best I can
Will always be my number one and only plan
Yes everyday I’ll try to be as true as I can to You
‘Cause loving You the best I can
Will always be my number one and only plan
They say: “You’re out of your mind”
“Don’t you know that love fades away?”
They say: “It only brings you pain!”
But what I feel is so real!
I gave it up and turned to You
‘Cause I know what your love can do
O Allah open up our hearts
And make us feel how it’s so real with You!
CHORUS

Māhūr Instrumental (Live at the Dubai Opera)
My heart is so full of longing
I wish to be close to my Beloved
I dream to walk in the streets of Medina
And to quench the thirst of my spirit
By visiting you, O Muhammad!

O Messenger of Allah
May salutations be sent upon you O my Beloved
O Prophet of Allah
May salutations be sent upon you
O Messenger of Allah
May salutations be sent upon you O my Beloved
O Prophet of Allah, O Messenger of Allah
I left all my troubles and worries
As I entered your Mosque so gently
And as I finally stood there before you
I couldn’t stop my tears from falling
In your presence O Muhammad!
