When paths meet (Live at the Holland Festival)
أناشيد الألبوم
DESCRIPTION:
Experience the beauty and unity of diverse musical traditions with Sami Yusuf’s
latest release, ‘One.’ Recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022,
this piece showcases exceptional artistry from Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra, and Sami Yusuf’s own ensemble.
Composed and arranged by Sami Yusuf,
‘One’ is a stunning blend of Western European vocal performance and the dynamic
rhythms of Andalusian, North African and Middle Eastern instruments including the ney,
violin, qanun, santur and percussions.
The German words by Meister Eckhart and Arabic poetry by Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari
speak of the Eternal I and the unity of vision, emphasising the separate beauty of
each path and their underlying unity.
Performed in E Flat with allusions to maqām Nahāwand,
‘One’ opens with Cappella Amsterdam’s hauntingly beautiful vocals,
transitioning to the richly textured and dynamic rhythms of Amsterdam
Andalusian Orchestra, culminating in a mesmerising santur and percussion performance
by Sami Yusuf’s ensemble.
‘One’ invites you to experience the oneness of the human spirit in art.

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

I Only Knew Love (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘The Fire Within’ evokes the flame of love
that burns in the hearts of seekers everywhere.
This rich musical tapestry weaves together mystical strands of music and poetry
as it moves seamlessly from the aeolian sound of European choral music
to Andalusian modes to Middle Eastern scales.
Here we hear the voice of each tradition clearly articulated
as in an intricate conversation with one another.
Layer upon layer of melodies and rhythms serve to clarify the composer’s vision
and to lead the listener inward to a place of knowing beyond words.
Lyrics are drawn from mystical poets: Kaygusuz Abdal (Turkish lyrics),
Hildegard von Bingen (Latin lyrics),
Mansur ibn al-Hallaj and Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari (Arabic lyrics).
Performed by Cappella Amsterdam, The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra,
and Sami Yusuf’s ensemble.

The Fire Within (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed British composer Sami Yusuf brings the immensely popular
Moroccan folk song ‘Fiyyashiyya’ to a European audience in his stunning
new arrangement performed live at the Holland Festival.
An achingly eloquent solo improvisation on the Chinese erhu
by the world-renowned master Guo Gan opens the piece,
which then moves into a joyful call and response between Sami Yusuf
and the vocalists of Cappella Amsterdam. As the rhythm builds,
the Arabic lyrics sung by the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra
are answered in English by Cappella Amsterdam.
This innovative rendition captures the exuberant essence of
the North African folk sound just as it clearly captured the hearts
of the audience who are heard clapping and singing along.
Written by the Moroccan poet
Sidi Othman ibn Yahya Cherki (known as “Sidi Bahloul Cherki”) in the 17th century

DESCRIPTION:
‘Karitas’ is a spellbinding new composition by acclaimed British musician Sami Yusuf.
It was recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022 and delivered with
exceptional artistry by Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra & the composer’s own ensemble.
The work moves with intelligence and fluidity from Western choral music
to Middle Eastern modes to the cadence of Andalusia.
Modes traverse boundaries from the distinctive Bayati Shiraz
and Rast maqams to the aeolian. Subtly flowing rhythms & improvisation,
entrancing solos on the Chinese erhu, oud, ney, violin,
underscore the depth of the dialogue among traditions taking place here.
Lyrics by Fuzuli, a 16th c. Azerbaijani writer known as a poet of divine love,
are echoed here in the words of the 12th c. German mystic Hildegard of Bingen.
Intoxicatingly beautiful mawwals take verses from
the Andalusian poet Abul Hasan al-Shushtari (13th c.) and
Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi, a 17th c. Syrian writer.

Karitas (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

أعمال قد تنال استحسانك
LYRICS:
The high heavens exalt Your Name,
from which all names take their grace.
Timeless glories mark out Your reign,
from Your lofty dwelling place.
Understanding, bounteous One,
eternal gift of plenty;
omniscient, just and divine,
our Judge in all Your glory.
سبحت باسمك المجيد السماء
وتسامت باسمك الأسماء
يا عظيماً يا حليماً وفرداً
من عطاياك دامت الآلاء
You give breeze to the wheeling birds
Sustained high up in the sky,
as You nurture us here on earth.
In Your warmth we glorify.
You sent messengers to us, Lord,
Revealing Your word and light.
You taught the scale above the sword,
Your justice is all men’s right.
عندها نرتجي من الله عفواً
حين يأتي محمد واللواء
فاجعل المصطفى شفيعاً وكن لي
غافراً ذاك مطلبي والرجاء
We seek the mercy of God.
I beg, Prophet, speak for me!
Led by Mohammed’s great banner,
Your forgiveness is my plea.

Glorification (Live at the Dubai Opera) – Sami Yusuf
From East to West the Light of His Word does shine,
For It issues from that central Pole Divine,
Which is neither to the East nor the West confined,
And yet both East and West in Its Light unites.
From East to West the Light of His Word does shine,
For It issues from that central Pole Divine,
Which is neither to the East nor the West confined,
And yet both East and West in Its Light unites.

Be like the sun
Shining with light
Be like a rose
Spreading its fragrance
In every path
Be like the earth
Humble and wise
Be like the rain
Pouring all your love
To every soul
Stop speculating and guessing
Trust what your heart is sensing
Every new breath is a blessing
Sent by Allah
Inspire people with your manners
Dedicate your life to helping others
If you don’t know them they’re still not strangers
All other humans are your brothers
Stop speculating and guessing
Trust what your heart is sensing
Every new breath is a blessing
Sent by Allah
Why do we chase after material possessions?
Do we really think that it will bring us pleasure?
Don’t think contentment comes from having wealth
None of it will delay our moment of death
Peace and happiness are in worshipping Allah
Stop speculating and guessing
Trust what your heart is sensing
Every new breath is a blessing
Sent by Allah

Prism:
The light of our sun contains all the colours of this world, and the Prism allows us
to separate this light in to its “secret layers”. Inspired by a phrase
from a Hadith Qudsi (Sacred scripture): “When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears,
his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he moves and his foot with which he walks”,
the Prism is a symbol of discovery, a way of seeing “with which he sees”.

Lyrics:
All of your waves
Have come from one
The seed has spread
The dawn of light
Has split from white
To blues and reds
Behind it all
There must be more
Seven colours of day
Show the light of your way
Have I found what is lying behind
The fire in your eyes?
Do you see what I see?
And from one breath
All sound was formed
Your words could sing
The prism shares
Your secret layers
Unraveling
Behind it all
There must be more
Seven colours of day
Show the light of your way
Have I found what is lying behind
The fire in your eyes?
Do you see what I see?
Every heart, Every hand, Every head
Rise up
Every thought, Every tear, Every smile
Rise up
Every fear, Every doubt, Every trouble
Rise up
Every hope, Every wish, Every prayer
Rise Up
Every faith, Every creed, Every colour
Rise Up
Every mind, Every soul, Everyone
(Rise Up)
Do you see what I see?

Lyrics:
I know that You could easily
Take away everything You’ve given me
And I try to remember
Not to take anything for granted
‘Cause I know that one day
Suddenly this will all come to an end
So my last wish is for You to be pleased with me
Chorus:
Allah, Ya Allah
Guide me all the way to Your Jannah
Ya Allah, Ya Allah
Don’t let me go astray ’cause I need You
By my side, I wish to be close
Close to You throughout my life
Ya Allah, O Allah!
Be with me all the way
I know that sometimes I do
I do forget that my next breath could be the last
Forgive me ’cause I can’t thank You enough
Forgive me when I doubt Your love
Now I pray for that day
When all this stops and comes to an end
So my last wish is for You to be pleased with me
CHORUS
Day by day passes
And I think that my time could be near
So I pray: O God let this world be in my hands
And not in my heart
‘Cause soon I’ll have to leave it (x2)
CHORUS (x3)
Guide me all the way
Don’t let me go astray

Assalamu Alayka – Lyrics:
My heart is so full of longing
I wish to be close to my Beloved
I dream to walk in the streets of Medina
And to quench the thirst of my spirit
By visiting you O Muhammad!
Chorus:
Assalamu alayka ya
Ya Rasool Allah
Assalamu Alayka ya habibi
Ya Nabiy Allah
Assalamu alayka ya
Ya Rasool Allah
Assalamu Alayka ya habibi
Ya Nabiy Allah, ya Rasool Allah
I left all my troubles and worries
As I entered your Mosque so gently
And as I finally stood there before you
I couldn’t stop my tears from falling
In your presence O Muhammad!
Chorus
O Taiba your breeze is so blessed
Indeed it brought life back to my spirit
I’ve left my heart with my beloved
Sending blessings on Muhammad

Feel the joy, it’s all over the place,

Lyrics:
Everywhere I hear your name being mentioned
The whole world is talking about you
And the thought of being part of your nation
I’m so proud to follow you
Day and night you sacrificed
Led us from darkness to light
And I,
Until the end of my time
I will love you
صلى عليك الرحمانُ
أزكى الصلاة والسلام

“By My Side” Lyrics:-
Sometimes I can’t see
Where I’m supposed to go
Sometimes I speed up,
When I should take it slow
But through all my hard times
When I lose my way
You’re concealing my mistakes, yeah!
Pre-Chorus:
I know You’re always by my side
Never turning out Your light
When I need You most Your stars will shine
Chorus:
When I’m out there in the darkest place
Worn and tired
I can still see You illuminate
All my skies
When it feels like I’ve fallen too far from You
There You, there You, there You are
Guiding me through
Whenever I feel down
You can lift me up
Turning my life around
With Your love
No matter how rough it gets
I can wear a smile
‘Cause Your mercy never dries
I know You’re always by my side
Never turning out Your light
When I need You most Your stars will shine
PRE-CHORUS & CHORUS
Ain’t nobody, no no nobody
That knows me like You do
Ain’t nobody who makes me feel this way
Got no worries, no no worries
About anything
Cause I know You’re always there, oh

Wash away that guilty frown
Falling rain, rising sun,
So many things to get done
I am done, it’s your turn
I’m getting old, no time to burn
Chorus:
And no one knows but me, the power that I see
And everybody thinks that I’ve gone crazy
And no one knows but me, just thinking of what could be
And everybody thinks they’re the one…but me
Rise up strong! What you’ll see
Oh, is this real or imaginary?
Shining bright, the night has come
The better life has not yet begun
Here we are, lessons learned
I am done, now it’s your turn!
CHORUS
People think that I’m alone, but I feel close to You
They don’t see that I can love, but I know You do
No one knows just how I feel, only You see through to my heart
CHORUS
Hands raised high, only You can see
For no one knows…but You and me
Lyrics: Raef & Omar Nawaz Khan
Melody: Raef & Maher Zain
Arrangement: Maher Zain

Wash away that guilty frown
Falling rain, rising sun,
So many things to get done
I am done, it’s your turn
I’m getting old, no time to burn
Chorus:
And no one knows but me, the power that I see
And everybody thinks that I’ve gone crazy
And no one knows but me, just thinking of what could be
And everybody thinks they’re the one…but me
Rise up strong! What you’ll see

I Only Knew Love (Live at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music) – Sami Yusuf
Lyrics:
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya Rasulullah
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya HabeebAllah
Knowing when I hear of things you said and did
You’re the most beautiful one that’s ever lived
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya Rasulullah
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya HabeebAllah
Just a glimpse of you once and that’s all it takes
For my hardships my worries to melt away
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya Rasulullah
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya HabeebAllah
As I read how the companions honoured you
Little do I feel I have to offer you.
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya Rasulullah
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya HabeebAllah
If I were to sit tonight and send you peace
While they sleep would your attention fall on me.
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya Rasulullah
Asalaato Wasalaamu Alayka Ya HabeebAllah

Lyrics:
I know that I’m not alone
What I’ve seen, has been seen before
But it hurts just like a thorn
A pain I’ve never felt before
My heart says: “Just speak the truth”
But my mind says: “Don’t be a fool”
Need to get something off my mind
Don’t let this silence be misunderstood
I don’t know where my heart will take me
But I know your light will protect me
From this fragile world
I don’t know where I’m destined to be
Rich or poor, famous, loved or lonely
But I know, without your light I’ll never cope
In this fragile world
Did you think you can silence me?
With your lies, games and deceit?
You can continue robbing me
But you won’t rob my dignity
I know that life is just a game
An illusion that will fade
Cheat and lie, have it your way
But you can’t cheat death, no way
I don’t know where my heart will take me
But I know your light will protect me
From this fragile world
I don’t know where I’m destined to be
Rich or poor, famous, loved or lonely
But I know, without your light, I’ll never cope
In this fragile world
Life’s just a game
An illusion that will fade
Cheat and lie have it your way

I Miss You – Taha Hosna
We once had a Teacher
The Teacher of teachers,
He changed the world for the better
And made us better creatures,
Oh Allah we’ve shamed ourselves
We’ve strayed from Al-Mu’allim,
Surely we’ve wronged ourselves
What will we say in front him?
Oh Mu’allim…
[Chorus]
He was Muhammad salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam,
Muhammad, mercy upon Mankind,
He was Muhammad salla Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam,
Muhammad, mercy upon Mankind,
Teacher of all Mankind.
Abal Qasim (one of the names of the Prophet)
Ya Habibi ya Muhammad
(My beloved O Muhammad)
Ya Shafi’i ya Muhammad
(My intercessor O Muhammad)
Khayru khalqillahi Muhammad
(The best of Allah’s creation is Muhammad)
Ya Mustafa ya Imamal Mursalina
(O Chosen One, O Imam of the Messengers)
Ya Mustafa ya Shafi’al ‘Alamina
(O Chosen One, O intercessor of the worlds)
He prayed while others slept
While others ate he’d fast,
While they would laugh he wept
Until he breathed his last,
His only wish was for us to be
Among the ones who prosper,
Ya Mu’allim peace be upon you,
Truly you are our Teacher,
Oh Mu’allim..
[Chorus]
Ya Habibi ya Muhammad
(My beloved O Muhammad)
Ya Shafi’i ya Muhammad
(My intercessor O Muhammad)
Ya Rasuli ya Muhammad
(O My Messenger O Muhammad)
Ya Bashiri ya Muhammad
(O bearer of good news O Muhammad)
Ya Nadhiri ya Muhammad
(O warner O Muhammad)
‘Ishqu Qalbi ya Muhammad
(The love of my heart O Muhammad)
Nuru ‘Ayni ya Muhammad
(Light of my eye O Muhammad)
He taught us to be just and kind
And to feed the poor and hungry,
Help the wayfarer and the orphan child
And to not be cruel and miserly,
His speech was soft and gentle,
Like a mother stroking her child,
His mercy and compassion,
Were most radiant when he smiled
[Chorus]

“Medina” Lyrics:-
Medina, Medina
Medinatun Nabi (the city of the Prophet)
In my dreams I make my way to Medina
The home and chosen place
Of our beloved Prophet
Where all I feel is peace
And so much joy around
No better place for me, yeah!
Chorus:
Medina, Medina
Medinatun Nabi (the city of the Prophet)
Medina, Medina
That’s where I want to be
Medina, Medina
Medinatun Nabi
Medina, Medina
That’s where I want to be
Oh, oh, Medina Medina
Oh, oh, Medina Medina
I wake with the morning light in Medina
Everywhere I see blue skies
Set above these mountains
Bright colours fill the streets
A smile on every face
A special place for me, yeah!
CHORUS
Tala’al badru ‘alayna, min thaniyyatil wadaa’
Wajabash shukru ‘alayna, ma da’a lillahi daa’
Ayyuhal mab’uthu fina, ji’ta bil amril mutaa’
Ji’ta sharraftal Medina, marhaban ya khayra daa’
(The full Moon rose over us
From the valley of Wadaa’
And we owe it to show gratefulness
Whenever a caller prays to Allah
O you who were raised amongst us
Coming with the word to be obeyed
You have brought to Medina nobleness
Welcome, best caller to God’s way)
CHORUS
Medina, Medina
Medinatun Nabi

Lyrics:
Life can be so hard sometimes
Break you up inside
All you want to do is cry
Shut the door and hide
Don’t surrender to what was
Put your faith in what will be
Everyday is a brand new start
Chorus:
Let it go, let it go
Let it go, let it go
Giving up should never be
Something you decide to do
Wipe the tears from your cheek
God knows what you’re going through
So don’t surrender to what was
Put your faith in what will be
Everyday is a brand new start, yeah
CHORUS
I know it’s hard but believe and keep trying
And it will be okay
‘Cause in your heart is the strength to survive it
You will be okay
And in no time like the sun you’ll be shining
Just let it go away
CHORUS
Let it go away, let it go
Oh, let it go
