Jaaneh Jaanaan
Jaaneh Jaanaan:
Jaaneh Jaanaan resonates with the tones of a tradition of divine love poetry in Persian
that has resounded through the hearts of lovers for a millennium. Jaaneh Jaanaan is
an intimate conversation with the true Beloved, whom the bewildered poet sees everywhere.
He sings of earthly beauty, of the spiritual guide, and of the Divine Beloved Himself,
for all true love is ultimately love of the Divine.

Lyrics :
(O You whose thought seizes the heart of the young and old)
(In your midst, the hearts takes flight at every moment)
(You are the hope in hearts; the shelter of lives;)
(The eternal light of the heavens and the earth, and the face of infinite beauty)
(You have become my world, my dream, my Beloved!)
(Tears stream down from my eyes when I linger in thought of You)
(I am at safety with You, o desire of my soul, I have no home nor name without You)
(I am in darkness without You, ignorant of any direction (to take))
(Your name will never leave my tongue till I am alive)
(Your loving and desirous fragrance settles my heart)
(You are boundless light, eternal grace, I’m a sinner but You are The Most Kind)
(You are a signpost for the lovers’ hearts)
(Without You, o the One who puts my heart at rest, I would be the loneliest soul in this world)
(Till eternity, I will be Your most enraptured lover in this world)
(I can only be in thought of You as I know naught but You)
(O object of my everlasting desire, the reason for the peace of my heart and mind.)

Lyrics:
You came to me
In that hour of need
When I was so lost
So lonely
You came to me
Took my breath away
Showed me the right way
The way to lead
You filled my heart with love
Showed me the light above
Now all I want
Is to be with you
You are my one true love
Taught me to never judge
Now all I want
Is to be with you
Allahumma Salli ‘ala Sayyinda Mustafa, ‘ala Habibeeka, Nabi’eeka, Mustafa
You came to me
In a time of despair
I called on you
You were there
Without you
What would my life mean?
To not know the unseen
The worlds between
For you I’d sacrifice
For you I’d give my life
Anything…
Just to be with you
I feel so lost at times
By all the hurt and lies
Now all I want
Is to be with you
Allahumma Salli ‘ala Sayyinda Mustafa, ‘ala Habibeeka, Nabi’eeka, Mustafa
Showed right from wrong
Taught me to be strong
Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul Allah
You came to me
In that hour of need
Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul Allah
You filled my heart with love
Showed me the light above

DESCRIPTION:
Composer Sami Yusuf’s mastery of musical languages dazzles in ‘L’Amour Vivant’.
The initial movement unfolds within the intricate geometry of the Baroque style,
a form that was imprinted on the composer’s soul during his upbringing in London
and that remains a cherished inspiration. From the start we hear the subtle
meeting of musical paths in the Arabic baladi rhythm that underlies the graceful melody.
The transition into the second movement transports the listeners to the heart of Sami Yusuf’s
other musical heritage, immersing them in the Central Asian Azerbaijani world.
The third movement revisits the Baroque sound before incorporating
the rich tonalities and nuanced rhythms of the Middle East and Persia,
seamlessly blending them into a sweeping soundscape.
The meditative sounds of the West African kora and the sensuous tones of the Chinese erhu then follow.
The final movement acts as a love letter to the world classical traditions encapsulated here,
skillfully weaving together the myriad emotions experienced throughout this journey in sound.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is one of Sami Yusuf’s compositions from the second concert of his ‘When Paths Meet’ series.
It features The Sami Yusuf Ensemble, The Scoring Orchestra of Paris, The Métaboles,
and stellar soloists and specialist musicians in a stunning collaboration.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is classical crossover at its most innovative.
Performed at the Paris Philharmonic.

LYRICS
Nightshade blooming in my garden
Love I found on my way
Taking root when all was darkened
Scarred in me always
Shine, shine, shine on my dark nights
Shine a light on me
I’ve been wandering all my life and
Now I see the land
In my mornings, waves have taken
What I thought was there
I left you in time forsaken
(With) flowers in your hair
Shine, shine, shine on my dark nights
Shine a light on me
I’ve been wandering all my life and
Now I see the land

Toujous Proche (Always Be There) Lyrics:
Allahou Akbar.. Allahou Akbar.. Allahou Akbarou Allahou Akbarou Allah…

DESCRIPTION:
Acclaimed British composer Sami Yusuf brings the immensely popular
Moroccan folk song ‘Fiyyashiyya’ to a European audience in his stunning
new arrangement performed live at the Holland Festival.
An achingly eloquent solo improvisation on the Chinese erhu
by the world-renowned master Guo Gan opens the piece,
which then moves into a joyful call and response between Sami Yusuf
and the vocalists of Cappella Amsterdam. As the rhythm builds,
the Arabic lyrics sung by the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra
are answered in English by Cappella Amsterdam.
This innovative rendition captures the exuberant essence of
the North African folk sound just as it clearly captured the hearts
of the audience who are heard clapping and singing along.

(Translation and transliteration):
Na main momin vich maseetaan
Na main vich kufar diyan reetaan
Na main paakaan vich paleetaan
Na main moosa na firown
(Not a believer inside the mosque, am I Nor a pagan disciple of false rites
Not the pure amongst the impure Neither Moses, nor the Pharoh)
Bulleya Ki jaana main Kaun
(Bulleya! to me, I am not known)
Na vich shaadi na ghamnaaki
Na main vich paleeti paaki
Na main aabi na main khaki
Na main aatish na main paun
In happiness nor in sorrow, am I Neither clean,

Lyrics:
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Golap-thar-gondho-bilay? (…the rose gives out its fragrance?)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Megher-pahar-brishti-jhoray? (…the clouds release the rain?)
Ei-duniay (…in this world)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Hashe-chad-akashe? (…the moon smiles in the sky?)
Jonaki-dhey-je-alo (…and the firefly glows…)
Mayabi-abeshe? (…in an air of enchantment?)
She-kotha-bhebe-bhebe (Pondering over all of this…)
Mon-amar-jay-hariye (…my mind becomes lost in wonderment…)
Dur-ojanay (…to a faraway, unknown place)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Golap-thar-gondho-bilay? (…the rose gives out its fragrance?)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Megher-pahar-brishti-jhoray? (…the clouds release the rain?)
Ei-duniay (…in this world)
Who made the clouds come by
So we can live and be?
Sending rain so soft and mild
Cleansing you and me?
Who gave me clear eyes to see
The moon when it beams?
He taught me how silent love can be
A road to your dreams
Who taught the mothers of the world
To love us the way they do?
When all the trials unfurl
All they think of is you
You still make me cry
You still make me laugh
Don’t let me ever forget
About our golden past
And so the world moves on its way
Newcomers join every day
Tomorrow they will say…

Üsküdar’a gider iken – طالما أشكو غرامي

Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence is a breathtaking musical odyssey through a rich
artistic and cultural heritage. The music was composed, arranged, and directed by Sami Yusuf
for the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee
in Baku on June 30, 2019. The performance was directed by the renowned creative director Andrei Boltenko.
This newly created cultural treasure comprises nine themes; each theme
expresses an aspect of the ethos of Azerbaijan from the land’s earliest
inhabitants some twenty thousand years ago to its contemporary realities and aspirations.
With fifty-seven highly skilled musicians under his direction,
Sami Yusuf displays his mastery of a complex musical language while
staying true to the traditional sounds of the region. The instruments
used (except the piano) are traditional instruments from the region including the tar,
an instrument so significant that it is said to have taken a role in shaping
the cultural identity of Azerbaijanis; the kamancha, the stringed instrument related to the Byzantine
lyra and European violin family; and the balaban, a double-reed ancient wind instrument with a plaintive, solemn sound.
Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence mesmerises with its dazzling musical range
from the subtle to the powerful and from the evocative to the majestic.
It is the soundscape of a region that displays an underlying universality.
These inspired compositions by this renowned musician evoke powerful emotional responses in listeners
no matter their cultural origin.

Lament (Live at the Dubai Opera) – Sami Yusuf
This powerful new composition begins with the haunting and resonant vocalizations of Sami Yusuf,
then adds instrumental, rhythmic, and vocal layers to create an epic unison section
that evokes the many-faceted aspects of the arc of Azerbaijan’s history. This piece features
stunning vocal solos by Sevda Alekperzadeh, Tayyar Bayramov, Samira Aliyeva, and a beautiful tar solo
by Sahib Pashazade that leads into the majestic outro.
Written in Bayāt-e Shīrāz mugham, its sweeping melody is inspired by the story of this region
from its earliest times to its hopes for the future.

Lyrics:
You came to me
In that hour of need
When I was so lost
So lonely
You came to me
Took my breath away
Showed me the right way
The way to lead
You filled my heart with love
Showed me the light above
Now all I want
Is to be with you
You are my one true love
Taught me to never judge
Now all I want
Is to be with you
Allahumma Salli ‘ala Sayyinda Mustafa, ‘ala Habibeeka, Nabi’eeka, Mustafa
Seni andım,
Sana muhtacım,
Nurunla aydınlandım
Hayatım, senle anlamlı
Sende çözüldü, herşeyin sırrı
Sana kurban olsun
Canım feda olsun
Yeter ki ruhum
Seninle olsun
Günahlarda kayboldum
Acılarla yoğruldum
Yeter artık ruhum
Seninle olsun
Allahumma Salli 3ala Sayyinda Mustafa, 3ala Habibeeka, Nabi’eeka, Mustafa
Showed me right from wrong
Taught me to be strong
Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul Allah
You came to me
In that hour of need
Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul Allah
You filled my heart with love
Showed me the light above
Now all I want

DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

“I’m Alive” Lyrics:
You’re the reason my life’s worth living
You’re the reason I’m alive
I’d be lost without You
You’re the reason that I strive
You’re my destiny
You’re my reverie
You’re the reason that I breathe
You are all that I believe
Chorus:
Ilahi, ilahi, ilahi, Maula
(My Lord, my Lord, my Lord, my Master)
Ho malang mein
(Like a wandering mystic)
Zindagi ki raah chal chala
(I have set forth on this journey called life)
Hai Khuda ek tera mera
(One Creator for you and me)
Hai ek falsafa
(This is my philosophy [in life])
Pre-Chorus:
Khana’badosh hon
(I’m a nomad traveller)
Mein madhosh hon
(I’m lost in a trance)
Tere ishq mein
(In Your supreme love)
Mein sharaboor hon
(I am deeply submerged)
CHORUS
For so long I’ve been denying
But now I feel like I’m flying
I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive
Now nothing seems impossible
With You I feel unstoppable

Ze Eshqat ( Songs of the way Vol.01 ) – Sami Yusuf
Sari Gelin:
Sari Gelin is a famous Azeri folk song hugely popular around the world, particularly in Turkey,
Azerbaijain and the Persian speaking countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan) as well as Uzbekistan,
Greece, Bosnia and Serbia to name just a few. There are many traditional versions of this hauntingly emotional melody.
This is our humble attempt at creating an English version of this beautiful love song
based loosely on translations from the original variations.

lyrics:
I fight for a love
Knowing it can’t be won
Sent from a light above
Child of our golden Sun
Sari Gelin
I reach for hands
Knowing they can’t be held
Cursed by words I can’t tell
Broken under your spell
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin.
A beating drum
Searches on for your song
Echoes will carry on
Wondering where you’ve gone
Sari Gelin
Is that your voice
Caught in the mountain air?
Leading me to nowhere
Drifting in silent prayer
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Bu sevda nə sevdadır Səni mənə verməzlər Neynim aman, aman Neynim aman, aman Sarı gəlin
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin

Lyrics:
Nurun Nebi rahmet deva
(Your Light, O Prophet, is a mercy and a cure)
Sen kalbimin narına şifa
(You are the healing for the fire in my heart)
Ey Sevgili, senin ruhum
(O, Beloved, my soul is yours)
Yalnız senin ruhum
(My soul is only yours)
Nuruyla Rabbim Kıldı Nur
(My Lord created you with His light)
Seni kalbe bahşeden odur
(It is He who bestowed you as a gift to the hearts)
Ey Sevgili, senin ruhum
(O Beloved, my soul is yours)
Yalnız senin ruhum
(Only yours is my soul)
Kutlu Nebi selâm sana
(Blessed Prophet, salutations be upon you)
Adını anmak bile merhem bana
(Even the mention of your name is a balm for me)
Ey Rabbimiz haberdar et
(O Lord, let him know)
Bize yar ile vuslat nasip et
(And grant us union with the beloved)
Özlemin yara değil, benim ilacım
(Longing for you is not a wound, it is my medicine)
Yüreğimde muhabbetine muhtacım
(I need your love in my heart)
Yangın nedir, hasret nedir
(What is fire, what is longing)
Bilmez ki bilmeyen seni
(He who doesn’t know you doesn’t know their real meaning)
Kutlu Nebi selâm sana
(Blessed Prophet, salutations be upon you)
Adını anmak bile merhem bana
(Even the mention of your name is a balm for me)
