Veritas (Live at the Holland Festival)
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

Call My Name’s Lyrics :
Remember the time
when you and I were all alone
When we were so shy
now it feels so long ago
Whispered my name
soft as the falling snow
Close in my arms
promised I’d never let go
There’s a line that leads from you to me
It’s a path we’ve long forgotten
But if I could hear you calling
I’d come running
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Remember the time
when everything moved so slow
As if that one night
was all that we’d ever know
I’m still there waiting
hoping your voice will show
(Cos) wherever you are
that is where I call home
There’s a line that leads from you to me
It’s a path we’ve long forgotten
But if I could hear you calling
I’d come running
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
Call my name
Call my name and I’m yours
I’m right here
Beside you
I know you can’t see
Beloved
I’m waiting
For you to remember me

From East to West the Light of His Word does shine,
For It issues from that central Pole Divine,
Which is neither to the East nor the West confined,
And yet both East and West in Its Light unites.

Lyrics:
Vakit bir akşam
Halim perişan
Şarkılarda gam
Gözlerimde kan
Ruhumu saran
Bitmeyen tufan
Hasretinle bu
Dünya bir zindan
Olsa da hükmün
Hakkımda idam
Vazgeçmem bir an
Sığındığım liman
Gönlümde iman
Karanlık dünyada
Işığım Kuran
Kurtar kederden
Yoruldum dertten
Kanayan yarama
Sensin tek merhem
Vazgeçmem Sen’den
I am driftwood now
I am homeward bound
Pull me from the sea
Save what’s left of me
Kurtar kederden
Yoruldum dertten
Kanayan yarama
Sensin tek merhem
Vazgeçmem Sen’den
So forgive my wrongs

Lyrics :
Ey Allah’um (oh my god)
beni senden ayurma (do not seperate me from you)
Beni senin jamalinden ayurma (do not deprive me from your beauty)
Ashrefzade senin kemter kulundur (this prime creature has become poor creature)
Ilahi kulunu senden ayurma (my lord do not seperate your creature from you)
Seni sevmek benim dinim imanum (to love you is my religion my faith)
Ilahi dini imandan ayurma (my lord do not deprive from faith)
O Allah we cry to You,
and we implore
You not to turn us away from Your door
For we are drowning,
rescue us to the shore
Send Your blessings on us like a downpour
Allah’um Allah (O my lord my creator my sustainer)

Lyrics:
IT’S A GAME, THAT THEY PLAY
شتموه لما جهلوه
SHATAMUHU LAMMA JAHILUH
THEY INSULTED HIM WHEN THEY DIDN’T KNOW HIM
تبعوه لما عرفوا هداه
TABI’UHU LAMMA ARAFU HUDAH
THEY BECAME HIS FOLLOWERS WHEN THEY TRULY KNEW HIM
WHAT A SHAME, WHAT THEY SAY
شتموه لما جهلوه
SHATAMUHU LAMMA JAHILUH
THEY INSULTED HIM WHEN THEY DIDN’T KNOW HIM
تبعوه لما عرفوا هداه
TABI’UHU LAMMA ARAFU HUDAH
THEY BECAME HIS FOLLOWERS WHEN THEY TRULY KNEW HIM
WHERE ARE YOU IN MY DREAMS?
YOU FEEL SO CLOSE BUT SO FAR
WHEN ALL I WANT IS TO SEE
YOUR FACE IN FRONT OF ME
YOU MAKE ME CHASE AROUND
SHADOWS IN THE MOONLIGHT
ONLY FOR THE SUNRISE
TO OPEN MY EYES
MAKES ME JUMP TO MY FEET
WALK AROUND THE CITY STREETS
HOPING THAT I’LL FIND YOU
BY MY SIDE.
THEN I FEEL YOUR SUNLIGHT
BEAUTIFUL AND SO BRIGHT
FEELING I’M IN YOUR ARMS
FOR A WHILE
HOURS PASS LIKE A BREEZE
MOVING THROUGH THE PALM TREES
HAND IN HAND YOU AND ME
WITH YOUR SMILE
شتموه لما جهلوه
SHATAMUHU LAMMA JAHILUH
THEY INSULTED HIM WHEN THEY DIDN’T KNOW HIM
تبعوه لما عرفوا هداه
TABI’UHU LAMMA ARAFU HUDAH
THEY BECAME HIS FOLLOWERS WHEN THEY TRULY KNEW HIM

SEN BENİM NAZLI YARİMSİN
YOU, MY DELICATE BELOVED
SEN BENİM GÖZBEBEĞİMSİN
YOU, THE LIGHT OF MY EYE
SANA GÖNÜLDEN BAĞLANMIŞIM BEN
TIED TO YOU, AT THE HEART
SEN SEVDİĞİM SEVDİCEĞİM
YOU ARE MY DEEPEST LOVE, MY BELOVED
BEN SENİ BİR GÜL GİBİ KOKLARIM
INHALING YOUR SCENT, JUST LIKE SMELLING A ROSE
AŞKINLA TUTUŞUR AŞKINLA YANARIM
BURNING INSIDE, WITH THE FIRE OF YOUR LOVE
HEP SENİ ARAR SENİ SORARIM
I ALWAYS LOOK FOR, AND ASK OF YOU
SANA VARMAK İÇİN HAYAL KURARIM
ALWAYS DREAM OF REACHING YOU
(URDU)
تیرا تصور میرا ہی سکوں ھے
TERA TASAWUR MERA HE SAKOON HAI
THE VERY MENTION OF YOU BECOMES MY TRANQUILITY

TO TAKE YOUR NAME, IT BECOMES MY SANITY
وہ میٹھی باتیں تیری ھی سنوں میں
WOH METEE BATEIN TEREE HEE SOONOO MEIN
THOSE SWEET CONVERSATION OF YOURS I WOULD LISTEN TOO
دنیا برا مانے تو میں کیا کروں؟

IT’S THE SAME GAME THEY ALWAYS PLAY
I’LL TURN MY EARS THE OTHER WAY,
IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE EITHER WAY
IT’S A GAME THEY’RE ALWAYS GOING TO PLAY

Lyrics:
(ENGLISH)
Searched for the words
To describe your beauty
No matter how I tried
No word seemed worthy
Struggled to find
The right words for You
Words just fail to describe
What’s deep inside
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, wa Allahu Akbar
(URDU)
Zemmeen Aseman, Jinn-o-Insaa bhi
(Earth and the Heavens, Jinn and Mankind)
Teri taa’reefein, Kartey bayan sabhi
(All praise Thee)
Bekhud huey, Dono jahan hi
(So both worlds become intoxicated)
Ruh se nikley, Jab ye kalma…Subhan Allah…
(When the soul recites this one word…Subhan Allah)
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, Wa Allahu Akbar
(FARSI)
Dar havaye To
(In Your remembrance)
Par migoshaayam
(I spread my wings)
Be omidi ke roozi
(In hope for the day)
Sooye To ayam
(I come to You)
Dar vasfe To
(In describing You)
Jomleha ra gashtam
(I searched sentences)
Kalameyi najostam
(I found no word)
Joz inke gooyam
(Except to say)
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, Wa Allahu Akbar
(MALAY)
Ku mencari kata puji
(I searched for words to praise You with)
Buat menemani zikir hati
(Words to instill Your remembrance in my heart)
Namun tiada kalam yang pasti
(But no words are assuring enough)
Yang sesuci kalam ini
(As sacred as these)
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, Wa Allahu Akbar

Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, wa Allahu Akbar
(URDU)
Zemmeen Aseman, Jinn-o-Insaa bhi
(Earth and the Heavens, Jinn and Mankind)
Teri taa’reefein, Kartey bayan sabhi
(All praise Thee)
Bekhud huey, Dono jahan hi
(So both worlds become intoxicated)
Ruh se nikley, Jab ye kalma…Subhan Allah…
(When the soul recites this one word…Subhan Allah)
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, Wa Allahu Akbar
(FARSI)
Dar havaye To
(In Your remembrance)
Par migoshaayam
(I spread my wings)
Be omidi ke roozi
(In hope for the day)
Sooye To ayam
(I come to You)
Dar vasfe To
(In describing You)
Jomleha ra gashtam
(I searched sentences)
Kalameyi najostam
(I found no word)
Joz inke gooyam
(Except to say)
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, Wa Allahu Akbar
(MALAY)
Ku mencari kata puji
(I searched for words to praise You with)
Buat menemani zikir hati
(Words to instill Your remembrance in my heart)
Namun tiada kalam yang pasti
(But no words are assuring enough)
Yang sesuci kalam ini
(As sacred as these)
Subhan Allah, Wa alhamdulillah, la illaha il Allah, Wa Allahu Akbar

Lyrics / كلمات العمل:
Verse 1:
Chorus:
Chorus:
قلبي قلبي بک حیّا
روحي روحي لكَ عینیّا
قلبم با تو زنده میشود

How beautiful are the blessings
You’ve bestowed upon us your servants O mighty Allah
How can we ever thank You
for all the bounties you’ve bestowed upon us O mighty Allah
Her zaman ismin dilimizde ey Allah, ey Allah
Her zaman askin kalbimizde ey Allah, ey Allah
Your name is always on our tongues
Your love is always in our hearts
Biz gunahkar, biz perisan,
Sen Rahimsin, hem de Rahman
Aglarim, yalvaririm,
Bagisla bizi…
We are reckless sinners
You are most merciful and most compassionate
I cry and implore You to forgive us
Kendimize yazik ettik,
Hak yolunda hata ettik,
Aglarim, yalvaririm,
Bagisla bizi…
We’ve wronged ourselves
From the way of truth we have strayed
I cry and implore You to forgive us

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

The Meeting (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf
Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence is a breathtaking musical odyssey through a rich
artistic and cultural heritage. The music was composed, arranged, and directed by Sami Yusuf
for the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee
in Baku on June 30, 2019. The performance was directed by the renowned creative director Andrei Boltenko.
This newly created cultural treasure comprises nine themes; each theme
expresses an aspect of the ethos of Azerbaijan from the land’s earliest
inhabitants some twenty thousand years ago to its contemporary realities and aspirations.
With fifty-seven highly skilled musicians under his direction,
Sami Yusuf displays his mastery of a complex musical language while
staying true to the traditional sounds of the region. The instruments
used (except the piano) are traditional instruments from the region including the tar,
an instrument so significant that it is said to have taken a role in shaping
the cultural identity of Azerbaijanis; the kamancha, the stringed instrument related to the Byzantine
lyra and European violin family; and the balaban, a double-reed ancient wind instrument with a plaintive, solemn sound.
Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence mesmerises with its dazzling musical range
from the subtle to the powerful and from the evocative to the majestic.
It is the soundscape of a region that displays an underlying universality.
These inspired compositions by this renowned musician evoke powerful emotional responses in listeners
no matter their cultural origin.

DESCRIPTION:
Composer Sami Yusuf’s mastery of musical languages dazzles in ‘L’Amour Vivant’.
The initial movement unfolds within the intricate geometry of the Baroque style,
a form that was imprinted on the composer’s soul during his upbringing in London
and that remains a cherished inspiration. From the start we hear the subtle
meeting of musical paths in the Arabic baladi rhythm that underlies the graceful melody.
The transition into the second movement transports the listeners to the heart of Sami Yusuf’s
other musical heritage, immersing them in the Central Asian Azerbaijani world.
The third movement revisits the Baroque sound before incorporating
the rich tonalities and nuanced rhythms of the Middle East and Persia,
seamlessly blending them into a sweeping soundscape.
The meditative sounds of the West African kora and the sensuous tones of the Chinese erhu then follow.
The final movement acts as a love letter to the world classical traditions encapsulated here,
skillfully weaving together the myriad emotions experienced throughout this journey in sound.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is one of Sami Yusuf’s compositions from the second concert of his ‘When Paths Meet’ series.
It features The Sami Yusuf Ensemble, The Scoring Orchestra of Paris, The Métaboles,
and stellar soloists and specialist musicians in a stunning collaboration.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is classical crossover at its most innovative.
Performed at the Paris Philharmonic.

Lyrics:
Ey hüznüm, ey rahmet
(O my sadness, O mercy)
Ey iffet, ey Kudüs
(O purity, O Jerusalem)
Bir gözde yaş yada yağmur olsam
(If I were a teardrop in an eye or a drop of rain…)
Yağsam üstüne
(I would rain down on you)
Yangınların ben saklasam düşsem şehidin yüzüne
(I’d hide the fires, I’d fall on the face of a martyr)
Sabrın sonu selametin, kimi lanetin olur
(The end of patience is your salvation, but for whom will it be a curse)
Kaldır onur bayrağını dik dur!
(Raise your flag of honour and stand tall!)
Ey Kudüs ey Aksa
(O Jerusalem, O Al-Aqsa)
Unutulmadın asla
(You are never forgotten)
Umudumuz senle
(Our hope is with you)
Sen özgür ol Gazze
(Be free Gaza!)
Güneş doğarken müjdeler karanlıklar
(As the sun is rising, good news is coming to dispel the darkness)
Biter elemden sonra hep ferahlık var
(The pain is ending and there will be relief everywhere)
Enkazının bağrında bak çiçek açar
(Look, flowers are blooming in the heart of your rubble)
Güvercinler barış için kanat çırpar
(And doves are fluttering their wings for peace)
Ey Kudüs ey Aksa
(O Jerusalem, O Al-Aqsa)
Unutulmadın asla
(You are never forgotten)
Umudumuz senle
(Our hope is with you)
Sen özgür ol Gazze
(Be free Gaza!)
Benden seni sordukları günde bana
(On the day when they will ask me about you)
Dilime müjdelenen kutlu zaferi söylet
(Make my tongue sing the song of the blessed long-awaited victory)
Sustuklarımızı bizden sorma, affet ya Rab
(Don’t ask us about our silence and forgive us, O Lord)
Bu esarete özgürlüğü Sen nasip et
(And grant Palestine freedom from this subjugation)
