Veritas (Live at the Holland Festival)

DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

J’ai corrigé les paroles
Si parfois,
tu as du mal à avancer
si tu te sens seul, si tu te sens paumé.
Quand la nuit s’éternise,
que l’obscurité t’oppresse
même désemparé,
même si tu ne sais quelle voie suivre.
Ne baisse pas les bras
et ne perd pas espoir
car Allah est toujours proche de toi..
Refrain1:
Incha’allah..x3
Tu trouveras ta voie
Incha’allah..x3
Tu trouveras ta voie
Si parfois
tu commets tant de fautes
que pour te repentir
tu penses qu’il est trop tard.
Tellement confus
Refrain2:
Incha’allah..x3
Nous trouverons notre voie
Incha’allah..x3
Nous trouverons notre voie

Lyrics:
Malayalam Verse:
Jeevante nritham pole
Like the seasons of nature and life
Ororo poovum pullum neele
On your path to success, every plant and flower that acts as an umbrella
Theeratha kavyam theerpu
Life is like an eternal poem
Aa vinnil suryan porum
The Morning sun that shines your day
Ravakum tharajalam pookum
As well the stars that lit the sky for you
Kalathin thalam kelkan va
To let you hear the rhythm of life
Venal marum varsham peyyum
Come and witness the summer move aside for the rain to drop
Ushasandhyakalayi manasse padu
After the darkest night comes dawn
Thalarathe naam Thudaram yathra
so never back down and continue the journey
Hindi Verse:
Ye Subha Mein Ujala
This Brightness in the Morning
Ye Machalti Shaam Ka Roshan Tara
is like a glistening star on a fancy night
Kehta Hai Tu Bhi Aaa Jagmaga
that says “come and shine with me”
Ghani Hain Ye Rahen
The ways are thick
Judi Aise Jaise bahen
Combined as two arms
Manzil Pe tum gum Na ho Jana
Our point of destiny won’t be lost
Qadam Badha
Step Forward
Bulandi Pe Jaa
Reach the heights
Sapnay Tu Saja
Build all your dreams
Jalway tu Dikha
Come out in flying colors
Aman Ko Jaga
Bring peace
Ghamon Ko Bhula
Forget all the hardships

Allahu – Lyrics:
Chorus:
Jahan bhi dekun Allahu
Har khayal har guftugu
Jahan bhi jaoon Allahu
Mileen mujhae har manzilaen
(Wherever I look Allah is there
In every thought and every conversation
Wherever I go Allah is there
I’ve reached my journey’s end)
I’ll keep on searching; I know I’ll find Him
He is beside me; He’s always close to my heart
Always in my heart; we are never far apart
I always think of Him when I feel I cannot go on
Chorus
I’ll keep on moving; with every step I take
I’ll feel Him closer; I’ll never lose my way
I always turn to Him when my faith is wearing thin
I always remember He is Al-Baseeru (the All-Seeing)
Chorus
I’ll keep on praying for Him to guide me
I won’t lose my patience, believers always come through
Always there for me, especially in my time of need
I raise my hands and I know He’s listening to me

Lyrics:
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Golap-thar-gondho-bilay? (…the rose gives out its fragrance?)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Megher-pahar-brishti-jhoray? (…the clouds release the rain?)
Ei-duniay (…in this world)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Hashe-chad-akashe? (…the moon smiles in the sky?)
Jonaki-dhey-je-alo (…and the firefly glows…)
Mayabi-abeshe? (…in an air of enchantment?)
She-kotha-bhebe-bhebe (Pondering over all of this…)
Mon-amar-jay-hariye (…my mind becomes lost in wonderment…)
Dur-ojanay (…to a faraway, unknown place)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Golap-thar-gondho-bilay? (…the rose gives out its fragrance?)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Megher-pahar-brishti-jhoray? (…the clouds release the rain?)
Ei-duniay (…in this world)
Who made the clouds come by
So we can live and be?
Sending rain so soft and mild
Cleansing you and me?
Who gave me clear eyes to see
The moon when it beams?
He taught me how silent love can be
A road to your dreams
Who taught the mothers of the world
To love us the way they do?
When all the trials unfurl
All they think of is you
You still make me cry
You still make me laugh
Don’t let me ever forget
About our golden past
And so the world moves on its way
Newcomers join every day
Tomorrow they will say…

Biz aşka inandık
Bir ömür boyu dedik
Gülsün yüzümüz ve asla
Sonu gelmesin istedik
Nasib etsin hak herkese mutlak
El ele hep huzura koşmak
Biz iyi kötü her günde and içtik sevgiye,
Emelimiz layık olmak ebedi sevgiliye
Nasib etsin hak, herkese mutlak,
El ele, hep huzura koşmak
Chorus
Saadetimize nazar uğramasın,
Hep birlikte, Maşaallah
Diyelim diyelim esirgesin Allah
Hep birlikte, Maşaallah

Hep birlikte gelin sizde dua edelim,

Having fun making beautiful memories

Such a great day for everybody

Lyrics:
Ashaab e Muhammad haq ke wali, Abu-Bakar Umar Usmaan-o-Ali
Yaraan e Nabi mein sab se jali, Abu Bakar Umar Usmaan-o-Ali
They are the closest companions
Most high in rank is their station
Among the gems they were chosen
The first to build our foundation.
These four our Prophet did entrust
Through whom the truth would reach to us
The pillars of his ways and his love
The beacons of his light for all of us.
The stars who guide us through the night
Their path: it leads to paradise
They are the roots, we are the leaves
We are raindrops, they are the seas.
And when the Prophet left this world
No harder time for all it felt
Then strength was found when they stood tall
They lifted and firmly held his torch.
Indebted to them how we are
They went great lengths for this Ummah
Their vision was on times later
They sacrificed so much for us.

The first to build our foundation.
These four our Prophet did entrust
Through whom the truth would reach to us
The pillars of his ways and his love
The beacons of his light for all of us.
The stars who guide us through the night
Their path: it leads to paradise
They are the roots, we are the leaves
We are raindrops, they are the seas.
And when the Prophet left this world
No harder time for all it felt
Then strength was found when they stood tall
They lifted and firmly held his torch.
Indebted to them how we are
They went great lengths for this Ummah
Their vision was on times later
They sacrificed so much for us.

Güneşe bak, aya da bak
انظر للشمس، انظر للقمر
Look up at the sun, look up at the moon
Denize bak yağmurlara bak
انظر للبحر، انظر للأمطار
Look at the sea, look at the rains
Ne güzel hayat bu, maşallah…
يا لها من حياة جميلة ما شاء الله…
How beautiful is this life, Masha’Allah…
Sağına bak, soluna bak
انظر إلى يمينك، انظر إلى يسارك
Look to your right, look to your left
İnsanlara mutlulukla bak
انظر للناس بسعادة
Look happily at people
Ne güzel hayat bu maşallah…
يا لها من حياة جميلة ما شاء الله…
How beautiful is this life, Masha’Allah…
Hadi sende bir dene
هيا فلتجرب أنت أيضًا
Why don’t you give it a try
Koy elini kalbine…
ضع يدك على قلبك…
Put your hand on your heart …
Gül her ne olursa
مهما يحدث ابتسم
Smile whatever happens
Gülmek sadaka
الإبتسامة صدقة
Smiling is like giving alms
Gel katıl sen bize…
هيا انضم أنت أيضًا إلينا…
Come join us…
Koy elini kalbine
ضع يدك على قلبك
Put your hand on your heart…
Gülmek sadaka
الإبتسامة صدقة
Smiling is like giving alms
Gülmek sadaka
الإبتسامة صدقة
Smiling is like giving alms
Aç kalbini herkese nolur
أرجوك افتح قلبك للجميع
Please, open up your heart to people
Sonu elbet mutluluk olur…
ستجد السعادة في النهاية بالتأكيد…
You will surely find happiness at the end..
Gülmek sana yakıstı masallah…
الإبتسامة تليق عليك ما شاء الله…
Your smile suits you, Masha’Allah…
Kollarını açsana nolur…
ماذا سيحدث لو فتحتم أذرعكم
What will happen if you open your arms…
Kenetlenir herkes bir olur
ستتشابك ويصبح الجميع شخص واحد
The hands will be clasped and you will be like one person
Bu güzel dünyada, maşallah…
في هذه الدنيا الجميلة ما شاء الله
in this beautiful world, Masha’Allah…

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

Lyrics:
Softly you called to me
Out from the space between
Out from eternity
Where love winds a path unseen
Out of the wilderness
You beckoned my every step
I stumbled sometimes and yet
I never once looked back
Cause I would see
The man I know I used to be
How I was lost before you reached for me
And I don’t know
Where I would go
What I would do
Without you
Eser bir yel, dağılır sis
Ne iz bırakır ne bir giz
Yine o derin, dipsiz
O şefkatle affeden
Evvelim, şimdim, ahirim
Benim Sevgili sahibim
Bir okula misafirim
Mezuniyet bekleyen
So you might see
Just what your love has meant to me
And what the cost of losing you would be
No I don’t know
Where I would go or what I’d do
Without you
My heart won’t beat
Without your love in me
My eyes won’t see
Beauty without thee
Loves melody that you put in me
Would lead me to only
Silence without you
Cause I would see
The man I know I used to be
How I was lost before you reached for me
And I don’t know
Where I would go
What I would do
Without you

Sari Gelin:
Sari Gelin is a famous Azeri folk song hugely popular around the world, particularly in Turkey,
Azerbaijain and the Persian speaking countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan) as well as Uzbekistan,
Greece, Bosnia and Serbia to name just a few. There are many traditional versions of this hauntingly emotional melody.
This is our humble attempt at creating an English version of this beautiful love song
based loosely on translations from the original variations.

lyrics:
I fight for a love
Knowing it can’t be won
Sent from a light above
Child of our golden Sun
Sari Gelin
I reach for hands
Knowing they can’t be held
Cursed by words I can’t tell
Broken under your spell
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin.
A beating drum
Searches on for your song
Echoes will carry on
Wondering where you’ve gone
Sari Gelin
Is that your voice
Caught in the mountain air?
Leading me to nowhere
Drifting in silent prayer
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Bu sevda nə sevdadır Səni mənə verməzlər Neynim aman, aman Neynim aman, aman Sarı gəlin
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin

Sari Gelin ( The Centre Album ) – Sami Yusuf

Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence is a breathtaking musical odyssey through a rich
artistic and cultural heritage. The music was composed, arranged, and directed by Sami Yusuf
for the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee
in Baku on June 30, 2019. The performance was directed by the renowned creative director Andrei Boltenko.
This newly created cultural treasure comprises nine themes; each theme
expresses an aspect of the ethos of Azerbaijan from the land’s earliest
inhabitants some twenty thousand years ago to its contemporary realities and aspirations.
With fifty-seven highly skilled musicians under his direction,
Sami Yusuf displays his mastery of a complex musical language while
staying true to the traditional sounds of the region. The instruments
used (except the piano) are traditional instruments from the region including the tar,
an instrument so significant that it is said to have taken a role in shaping
the cultural identity of Azerbaijanis; the kamancha, the stringed instrument related to the Byzantine
lyra and European violin family; and the balaban, a double-reed ancient wind instrument with a plaintive, solemn sound.
Azerbaijan: A Timeless Presence mesmerises with its dazzling musical range
from the subtle to the powerful and from the evocative to the majestic.
It is the soundscape of a region that displays an underlying universality.
These inspired compositions by this renowned musician evoke powerful emotional responses in listeners
no matter their cultural origin.
