Mahur Instrumental (Live at the Dubai Opera) – Sami Yusuf
You are the Source of all power
My need in my darkest hour
My Lord
Your Light and Love all I seek
Nothing more I’d ever want or need
My Lord
Protect me from dishonour
Grant me faith to be stronger
My Lord
ذو الجلال و الإكرام، سيد الأكوان، هو المنان
إن لي رب عظيم، ليس مثله إله، هو الرحمن
Thul-Jalali Wal-Ikraami, Sayyidal-Akwaani, howal-Mannan.
Inna li Rabbun Adheem, Laysa mithluhu Illah, howa Arrhamaan.
The most Majestic and most Bountiful, Master of the Universe, the Most Gracious.
My Lord is truly Great, none can compare to Him, He is the Most Merciful.
You are the Source of all Mercy
Infinite Light for all to see
My Lord
Some claim to represent You
But everything they do is so far away from You
My Lord
Help us to know You better
Help us love one another
My Lord

كم يعاني قلبي،
لكن معي ربي
إلهي، رحمن
أنت نور الأمان
Kam yu’ani qalbi
Lakin ma’i Rabbi
Illahi, Rahmaan
Anta Noorul Amaan
How much my heart suffers,
But my Lord is with me,
My Lord, the Source of Mercy
You are the Light of Safety
I know some doors You may close
But this is how life’s story goes
You are my Guide the Source of Light
My Lord

Sari Gelin:
Sari Gelin is a famous Azeri folk song hugely popular around the world, particularly in Turkey,
Azerbaijain and the Persian speaking countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan) as well as Uzbekistan,
Greece, Bosnia and Serbia to name just a few. There are many traditional versions of this hauntingly emotional melody.
This is our humble attempt at creating an English version of this beautiful love song
based loosely on translations from the original variations.
—
lyrics:
I fight for a love
Knowing it can’t be won
Sent from a light above
Child of our golden Sun
Sari Gelin
I reach for hands
Knowing they can’t be held
Cursed by words I can’t tell
Broken under your spell
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin.
A beating drum
Searches on for your song
Echoes will carry on
Wondering where you’ve gone
Sari Gelin
Is that your voice
Caught in the mountain air?
Leading me to nowhere
Drifting in silent prayer
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Bu sevda nə sevdadır Səni mənə verməzlər Neynim aman, aman Neynim aman, aman Sarı gəlin
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun

DESCRIPTION:
‘Karitas’ is a spellbinding new composition by acclaimed British musician Sami Yusuf.
It was recorded live at the Holland Festival in June 2022 and delivered with
exceptional artistry by Cappella Amsterdam,
the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra & the composer’s own ensemble.
The work moves with intelligence and fluidity from Western choral music
to Middle Eastern modes to the cadence of Andalusia.
Modes traverse boundaries from the distinctive Bayati Shiraz
and Rast maqams to the aeolian. Subtly flowing rhythms & improvisation,
entrancing solos on the Chinese erhu, oud, ney, violin,
underscore the depth of the dialogue among traditions taking place here.
Lyrics by Fuzuli, a 16th c. Azerbaijani writer known as a poet of divine love,
are echoed here in the words of the 12th c. German mystic Hildegard of Bingen.
Intoxicatingly beautiful mawwals take verses from
the Andalusian poet Abul Hasan al-Shushtari (13th c.) and
Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi, a 17th c. Syrian writer.

Ibn Al-Haythams Adventure – 1001 Inventions and the World of Ibn Al-Haytham
‘Shirvanshah’s Palace’, a new instrumental work from Sami Yusuf, features a 57-member
orchestra and dazzling solos on oud, kamanche, tar and balaban.
The musical narrative is majestic, powerful and intensely beautiful.
This piece is performed in Shur mugham [Əbu Əta], evoking an ecstatic mood that
echoes the Sufi ceremony of remembrance.
Although the sub-mode Əbu Əta (Or Abū ’Atā) is seldom used in recent decades,
it has been part of the Azerbaijani mugham system for centuries. The composer has chosen
to honor this particular traditional expression here, and in doing so seeks
to contribute to the revival of this complex musical language.
Shirvanshah’s Palace is a 15th century complex in Baku where the revered philosopher and sage,
Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, taught and prayed and where his tomb is located.
Performed live at the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd World Heritage Committee held in Baku,
Azerbaijan on 30th June, 2019.

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.
