Lyrics:
Vakit bir akşam
Halim perişan
Şarkılarda gam
Gözlerimde kan
Ruhumu saran
Bitmeyen tufan
Hasretinle bu
Dünya bir zindan
Olsa da hükmün
Hakkımda idam
Vazgeçmem bir an
Sığındığım liman
Gönlümde iman
Karanlık dünyada
Işığım Kuran
Kurtar kederden
Yoruldum dertten
Kanayan yarama
Sensin tek merhem
Vazgeçmem Sen’den
I am driftwood now
I am homeward bound
Pull me from the sea
Save what’s left of me
Kurtar kederden
Yoruldum dertten
Kanayan yarama
Sensin tek merhem
Vazgeçmem Sen’den
So forgive my wrongs

Circle:
The Circle is a symbol of many things to different people: purity, unity,
equality to name a few. There are no corners, no angles, just a pure arc that continues infinitely.
Inspired by the Sufi whirling dervishes, The Circle is another symbol in this album
that represents oneness with our physical presence on this earth and our spiritual presence beyond.
—
lyrics:
I see you in the wings that chase the night
Circling the warmth of candlelight
I hear you in the wind as the two poles spin
Whispering the truth your heart holds in
I feel you in the chill as the seasons turn
Laying down a seed, with its lessons learned.
The circle spins a perfect line
Free from borders, free from time
I close my eyes and clear my mind
The circle joins your love with mine
I feel you in the sand of the desert earth
You know my hunger, know my thirst
I hear you in the cry of distant rain
Coming back to answer the call again
I meet you in the centre of the sacred dance
Reminding me your truth is in my heart
The circle spins a perfect line
Free from borders, free from time
I close my eyes and clear my mind
The circle joins your love with mine

Lament:
The encounter with the Transcendent inspires an unspeakable awe, in the face of which our worldly
existence appears as a source of separation and sorrow. Lament meditates on lines written by
Ibn ‘Arabi communicating the terror and wonder of an experience of the Infinitely Beyond.
The poet uses visceral language that associates the desolation of the lover with
the desolation of the desert to evoke the meeting of overwhelming attraction and overwhelming
fear in a heart that trembles in the face of the Absolute.

lyrics:
My father be the ransom of him for whose sake I melted with anguish!
My father be the ransom of him for whose sake I died of fear!
The blush of shame on his cheek is the whiteness of dawn conversing with the Redness of eve
They left me at al-Uthayl and an-Naqá
Who will compose my distracted thoughts?
Who will relieve my pain?
Guide me to him!
Who will ease my sorrow?
Who will help a passionate lover?
Whenever I keep secret the torments of desire
My tears betray the flame within and the sleeplessness
And whenever I say, ‘Give me one look!
The answer is, ‘Thou art not hindered but for pity’s sake.’

The Persian Nightingale – Sami Yusuf
‘Shirvanshah’s Palace’, a new instrumental work from Sami Yusuf, features a 57-member
orchestra and dazzling solos on oud, kamanche, tar and balaban.
The musical narrative is majestic, powerful and intensely beautiful.
This piece is performed in Shur mugham [Əbu Əta], evoking an ecstatic mood that
echoes the Sufi ceremony of remembrance.
Although the sub-mode Əbu Əta (Or Abū ’Atā) is seldom used in recent decades,
it has been part of the Azerbaijani mugham system for centuries. The composer has chosen
to honor this particular traditional expression here, and in doing so seeks
to contribute to the revival of this complex musical language.
Shirvanshah’s Palace is a 15th century complex in Baku where the revered philosopher and sage,
Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, taught and prayed and where his tomb is located.
Performed live at the Opening Ceremony of the 43rd World Heritage Committee held in Baku,
Azerbaijan on 30th June, 2019.

The opening sounds of this dramatic new composition by Sami Yusuf carry
the eternal message of wind and stones, with anchoring vocalization by Emin Mammadov.
Shur mugham elements are then introduced through the astonishing voice of Kanan Bayramli.
The sweeping melody conveys the majesty of place and the weight of time.
Rising above the Caspian Sea, Gobustan’s boulders contain six thousand ancient stone carvings,
messages left by our human ancestors over twenty thousand years ago.
They speak to us not just of another time, but of another way of being.
One remarkable feature of Gobustan are its stone drums, an ancient means of communicating
across distance (like a Stone Age text message).
The sound of these stone drums are incorporated into this extraordinary piece.

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

To Guide You Home (Instrumental) – Sami Yusuf
This powerful new composition begins with the haunting and resonant vocalizations of Sami Yusuf,
then adds instrumental, rhythmic, and vocal layers to create an epic unison section
that evokes the many-faceted aspects of the arc of Azerbaijan’s history. This piece features
stunning vocal solos by Sevda Alekperzadeh, Tayyar Bayramov, Samira Aliyeva, and a beautiful tar solo
by Sahib Pashazade that leads into the majestic outro.
Written in Bayāt-e Shīrāz mugham, its sweeping melody is inspired by the story of this region
from its earliest times to its hopes for the future.
