Breeze (Extended) (Live in Concert) – Sami Yusuf

Beyond the lines of no man’s land
Time stands still.
My voice is weak, but far away, I softly speak
In silent words, on folded knees,
With silent words we call the night,
To bring you sleep & dry your eyes,
To bring you dreams & free your minds,
When every hope has gone, we hold on.
With silent words we’ll ask the dawn,
To chase your fears when nights are long,
A million voices in to one,
When every hope has gone
We echo all night through
With silent words we are with you.
With every tear you cry, we’ll comfort you
Standing by your side, as one with you,
You can find us, deep in the silence
Carried in the soft winds passing through
We’ll be your shadow, today and tomorrow
There to follow everything you do.
ARABIC
الهي، أدخل السرور
Lord bring hapiness
Illahi adkhil asurroor
ياربِ أسعد القلوب
And cheer the hearts
Wa as3id al-quloob
الهي، خفف الآلام
Lord, alleviate the pain
Illahi khafif al-alaam
من لسوريا سواك؟
Who can save Syria other than You?
Man li-sooriyya siwaak?
من يحيي بسمةَ الحزين؟
Who can restore the smile of the depressed?
Mann yu7yyi basmatal-7azeen?
من يُنسي أنّةَ المسكين؟
Who can soothe (alleviate) the soreness of the poor?
Mann yunsi annatal-miskeen?
من يمسح دمعَ اليتيم؟
Who can wipe the tear of an orphan?
Mann yamsa7 dam3al-yateem?
أبكي بصمتٍ وأنين
Silently, I cry and moan
Abki bi-ssamtin wa aneen
عن شيخ، شاب، ويتيم
For an old man, a young man and an orphan
3an shaiyykhin, shaaban wa yateem
عنكِ يا…آه سوريا
About you … Ah Syria
3anki ya…ah sooriyya

Lyrics:
Don’t be saddened by what you see
By all the lies and treachery
Life is cruel but don’t worry
In your heart lies the key
To unwind all the secrets
Of this life we see
When you feel you’ve lost it all
When you don’t know who’s your friend or foe
You wonder why you’re so alone
Worry ends when faith begins
Don’t be sad by what you see
It’s true life has its miseries
But one thing’s always worked for me
Worry ends when faith begins
Don’t be saddened by what you see
I know life can be crazy
A showcase of hypocrisy
In the form of piety
It’s just one big mystery
For you and me
I found my peace deep within
Calling inside
Follow what you feel is right
So trust your heart go ahead
Don’t lose sight
Follow that voice deep inside
When you feel you’ve lost it all
When you don’t know who’s your friend or foe
You wonder what you’re so alone
Worry ends when faith begins
Don’t be sad by what you see
It’s true life has it’s miseries
But one thing’s always worked for me
Worry ends when faith begins
If you’re weak it’s not a crime
Don’t you know it’s blessing in disguise
To know who’s honest and who spread lies
Worry ends when faith begins
Don’t be sad by what you see
It’s true life has it’s miseries
But one thing’s always worked for me
Worry ends when faith begins

Worry Ends – Sami Yusuf

DESCRIPTION:
‘Call My Name’ is a love song inspired by Ibn ‘Arabi. Full of metaphysical allusions,
the lyrics evoke a memory of the bliss of divine union, the time when we were “alone with the Alone”
in paradise before the Fall. But that union has given way to separation. The beloved seems distant,
and the heart of the lover cries out, seeking a return to that unity that was lost. Mystical and evocative,
‘Call My Name’ echoes the divine longing that is the very essence of love.

About the Performance
Sami Yusuf’s instrumental composition ‘The Meeting’ is an intimate
and deeply personal work. Direct and non-linear, the melodies,
rhythms and vocalisations sustain and support
one another flawlessly as the music moves fluidly between the Western
aeolian mode and the Persian dastgah shur. Solos by Sami Yusuf on tar,
Guo Gan on erhu, and Asad Khan on sitar circle each other
to create an embracing ambience where each melodic line is a subtle gem,
strong and fragile in equal measure.

The Meeting (Live at the Holland Festival) – Sami Yusuf

This is an original instrumental composition in Bayāt-e Shīrāz mugham whose joyous melody is carried from the balaban and kemanche solos to the layered sounds of the orchestra. This piece celebrates the art of movement, an art that tells many stories and reveals the inner world of a culture.

Muhammad Part 2 (Bonus Track) – Sami Yusuf

DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.
