Veritas (Live at the Holland Festival)
DESCRIPTION:
Sami Yusuf’s composition ‘Veritas’ premiered at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam
as part of his concert series ‘When Paths Meet’.
From the minimal and ethereal sound of the intro,
it subtly transitions to a sense of awe at the astonishing majesty and multiplicity of creation.
The Persian-influenced musical phrasing of Sami Yusuf’s vocalisations
in the intro are inspired by the Daramad of Avaz-e dashti,
a subgroup of the Shur dastgah, a Persian modal system evocative of a meditative state.
Cappella Amsterdam sings quarter tones here and they do so brilliantly.
The flamenco and Andalusian sounds of the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra interplay
with Western classical elements and the vibrant Arabic maqam Bayati.
When the mode shifts to the passionate yearning of maqam Nahawand,
its similarity to the Western classical minor scale brings an effortless resonance between the two.
The outro joins Bayati and a harmonic minor scale in a multi-faceted,
fiery expression of multiple, even contradictory states of being,
while the vocalists insist,
‘Veritas’, ‘Veritas’ – Truth, Truth – and cast our focus beneath the turbulent surface storms
to the calm depths below.

lyrics:
Diliges proximum tuum tamquam te ipsum
[Translation: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself’]
Love to give!
To give is love,
And love the gift,
The gift of love.
No belief!
Without the love,
Believe in love!
The belief of love.
None of you truly believes until you love for your neighbour what you love for yourself.
[A saying of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)]
Love to give!
The gift of love,
Give the other,
All your love.
What a relief!
To give my love,
I am now you,
And you are my love!

Translation:
Remembering the beloved
we drank wine*;
we were drunk with it
before creation of the vine.
The full moon its glass,
the wine a sun circled by a crescent;
when it is mixed,
how many stars appear!
Our Lord, O our Lord!
If not for its fragrance,
I would not have found its tavern;
if not for its flashing gleam,
how could imagination picture it?
Time preserved nothing of it
save one last breath,
concealed like a secret
in the hearts of the wise ones.
Our Lord, O our Lord!
But if it is recalled among the tribe,
the worthy ones
are drunk by morn without shame or sin.
Be drunk one hour with it, and you shall have
All of time as your slave, at your command.
The one who lives sober in this world has not had a life,
And the one who dies not drunk has missed the mark.

Allah Sende malumdur halimiz
Allah Allah Senden mağfiret dileriz
Zatın yakın eyle, hatalarımı affeyle

Lyrics:
Malayalam Verse:
Jeevante nritham pole
Like the seasons of nature and life
Ororo poovum pullum neele
On your path to success, every plant and flower that acts as an umbrella
Theeratha kavyam theerpu
Life is like an eternal poem
Aa vinnil suryan porum
The Morning sun that shines your day
Ravakum tharajalam pookum
As well the stars that lit the sky for you
Kalathin thalam kelkan va
To let you hear the rhythm of life
Venal marum varsham peyyum
Come and witness the summer move aside for the rain to drop
Ushasandhyakalayi manasse padu
After the darkest night comes dawn
Thalarathe naam Thudaram yathra
so never back down and continue the journey
Hindi Verse:
Ye Subha Mein Ujala
This Brightness in the Morning
Ye Machalti Shaam Ka Roshan Tara
is like a glistening star on a fancy night
Kehta Hai Tu Bhi Aaa Jagmaga
that says “come and shine with me”
Ghani Hain Ye Rahen
The ways are thick
Judi Aise Jaise bahen
Combined as two arms
Manzil Pe tum gum Na ho Jana
Our point of destiny won’t be lost
Qadam Badha
Step Forward
Bulandi Pe Jaa
Reach the heights
Sapnay Tu Saja
Build all your dreams
Jalway tu Dikha
Come out in flying colors
Aman Ko Jaga
Bring peace
Ghamon Ko Bhula
Forget all the hardships

Sepanjang Hidup – Lyrics:
Sepanjang Hidup
aku bersyukur kau di sini kasih
di kalbuku mengiringi
dan padamu ingin ku sampaikan
kau cahaya hati
dulu ku palingkan diri dari cinta
hingga kau hadir membasuh segalanya
oh inilah janjiku kepadamu
sepanjang hidup bersamamu
kesetiaanku tulus untukmu
hingga akhir waktu kaulah cintaku cintaku
sepanjang hidup seiring waktu
aku bersyukur atas hadirmu
kini dan selamanya aku milikmu
yakini hatiku
kau anugerah Sang Maha Rahim
semoga Allah berkahi kita
kekasih penguat jiwaku
berdoa kau dan aku di Jannah
ku temukan kekuatanku di sisimu
kau hadir sempurnakan seluruh hidupku
oh inilah janjiku kepadamu
sepanjang hidup bersamamu
kesetiaanku tulus untukmu
hingga akhir waktu kaulah cintaku cintaku
sepanjang hidup seiring waktu
aku bersyukur atas hadirmu
kini dan selamanya aku milikmu
yakini hatiku
bersamamu ku sadari inilah cinta
tiada ragu dengarkanlah
kidung cintaku yang abadi

Lyrics:
(Translation and transliteration):
Zehaal-e-miskeen makun taghaaful, Daraye naina banaye battiyan.
Do not overlook my misery, by blandishing your eyes and weaving tales,
Ke taab-e-hijran nadaaramay jaan, Na leho kaahe lagaaye chattiyan.
My patience has over-brimmed, O sweetheart!
why do you not take me to your bosom.
Shabaan-e-hijraan daraaz chuuzulf, Woroz-e-waslatu cho umr koutaah.
Long like curls in the night of separation short like life on the day of
our union.
Sakhi piya ko jo maina dekhun, To kaise kaatun andheri rattiyan.
My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night without your face
before.
Yakayakaz dil do chashm-e-jaadu, Basadfarepham beburd taskeen.
Suddenly, using a thousand tricks the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind.
Kisay padi hai jo ja sunaaye, Piyare pee ko hamari battiyan,
Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling.
Chushamma sozan chuzarra hairaan, zamehere aapme
baghashtamaakhir
Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle, I roam about in the
fire of love.
Naneend naina nayang chainaa, Nayaap aayen nabhejen pattiyan,
Sleepless eyes, restless body, neither comes she, nor any message.

Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Golap-thar-gondho-bilay? (…the rose gives out its fragrance?)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Megher-pahar-brishti-jhoray? (…the clouds release the rain?)
Ei-duniay (…in this world)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Hashe-chad-akashe? (…the moon smiles in the sky?)
Jonaki-dhey-je-alo (…and the firefly glows…)
Mayabi-abeshe? (…in an air of enchantment?)
She-kotha-bhebe-bhebe (Pondering over all of this…)
Mon-amar-jay-hariye (…my mind becomes lost in wonderment…)
Dur-ojanay (…to a faraway, unknown place)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Golap-thar-gondho-bilay? (…the rose gives out its fragrance?)
Bolotho-kar-isharay (Tell me, on whose gesture…)
Megher-pahar-brishti-jhoray? (…the clouds release the rain?)
Ei-duniay (…in this world)
Who made the clouds come by
So we can live and be?
Sending rain so soft and mild
Cleansing you and me?
Who gave me clear eyes to see
The moon when it beams?
He taught me how silent love can be
A road to your dreams
Who taught the mothers of the world
To love us the way they do?
When all the trials unfurl
All they think of is you
You still make me cry
You still make me laugh
Don’t let me ever forget
About our golden past
And so the world moves on its way
Newcomers join every day
Tomorrow they will say…

Turkish Lyrics: Eşrefzâde
English Lyrics: Bara Kherigi
Arrangement: Sami Yusuf
Producer: Sami Yusuf
….
Lyrics :
Ey Allah’um (oh my god)
beni senden ayurma (do not seperate me from you)
Beni senin jamalinden ayurma (do not deprive me from your beauty)
Ashrefzade senin kemter kulundur (this prime creature has become poor creature)
Ilahi kulunu senden ayurma (my lord do not seperate your creature from you)
Seni sevmek benim dinim imanum (to love you is my religion my faith)
Ilahi dini imandan ayurma (my lord do not deprive from faith)
O Allah we cry to You,
and we implore
You not to turn us away from Your door
For we are drowning,
rescue us to the shore
Send Your blessings on us like a downpour
Allah’um Allah (O my lord my creator my sustainer)

Lyrics:
O Lal Meri Pat Rakhiyo Bhala
Jhule Laalan, Sindhdhi Da, Sewan Da, Shahbaz Qalandar Duma Dum Mast Qalandar
Ali Da Pehla Number
Ali Dum Dum De Andar
Ali Shahbaz Qalandar
O Lal Meri, O Lal Meri….
O red robed one! May I always be protected by You, O Jhoolelaal O Lord of Sindh and Sehwan, O noble Kalandar
The Lord in every breath of mine, glory be to you
Char Charagh Tere Balan Hameshan Panjwaan Mai Balan Aayi Bhala
Jhule Laalan, Sindhdhi Da, Sewan Da, Shahbaz Qalandar Duma Dum Mast Qalandar
Ali Dum Dum De Andar
Ali Da Pehla Number
Sewani Lal Qalandar
O Lal Meri, O Lal Meri…..
Your shrine is always lighted with four lamps
I’ve come here to light the fifth lamp in Your honour, O Jhoolelaal O Lord of Sindh and Sehwan, O noble Kalandar
The Lord in every breath of mine, glory be to you
Uchha Roza Peera Tera
Heth Wagey, Daryao Bhala
Jhule Laalan, Sindhdhi Da, Sewan Da, Shahbaz Qalandar Duma Dum Mast Qalandar
Ali Dum Dum De Andar
Ali Shahbaz Qalandar
Sewani Lal Qalandar
O Lal Meri, O Lal Meri……
Your grave is the highest oh lord
O master, friend and Sire of Sindh and Sehwan, The red robed God- intoxicated Qalandar
The Lord in every breath of mine, glory be to you
Oh Ghanan Ghanan Teri Naubat bhaje Ghanan Ghanan Teri Naubat lal bhaje Gharyal bhala Jhoole Lalan
Your drums are ringing
Your drums are ringing
Let the gong ring loudly for your glory, day and night, O Jhoolelaal
Peera Ve Mera Peer
Sab Da Wali Ae
Laqab Asadullah te Naam Ali Ae
Oh Naam e Ali Beda Paar Laga
Jhule Laalan, Sindhdhi Da, Sewan Da, Sakhi Shahbaz Qalandar
Lord oh my Lord
Everyone’s lord
We call him “Asadullah” and his name is “Ali”
Oh Ali protect us or save us
O master, friend and Sire of Sindh and Sehwan, The red robed God- intoxicated Qalandar
The Lord in every breath of mine, glory be to you.

DESCRIPTION:
Composer Sami Yusuf’s mastery of musical languages dazzles in ‘L’Amour Vivant’.
The initial movement unfolds within the intricate geometry of the Baroque style,
a form that was imprinted on the composer’s soul during his upbringing in London
and that remains a cherished inspiration. From the start we hear the subtle
meeting of musical paths in the Arabic baladi rhythm that underlies the graceful melody.
The transition into the second movement transports the listeners to the heart of Sami Yusuf’s
other musical heritage, immersing them in the Central Asian Azerbaijani world.
The third movement revisits the Baroque sound before incorporating
the rich tonalities and nuanced rhythms of the Middle East and Persia,
seamlessly blending them into a sweeping soundscape.
The meditative sounds of the West African kora and the sensuous tones of the Chinese erhu then follow.
The final movement acts as a love letter to the world classical traditions encapsulated here,
skillfully weaving together the myriad emotions experienced throughout this journey in sound.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is one of Sami Yusuf’s compositions from the second concert of his ‘When Paths Meet’ series.
It features The Sami Yusuf Ensemble, The Scoring Orchestra of Paris, The Métaboles,
and stellar soloists and specialist musicians in a stunning collaboration.
‘L’Amour Vivant’ is classical crossover at its most innovative.
Performed at the Paris Philharmonic.

Sari Gelin:
Sari Gelin is a famous Azeri folk song hugely popular around the world, particularly in Turkey,
Azerbaijain and the Persian speaking countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan) as well as Uzbekistan,
Greece, Bosnia and Serbia to name just a few. There are many traditional versions of this hauntingly emotional melody.
This is our humble attempt at creating an English version of this beautiful love song
based loosely on translations from the original variations.
—
lyrics:
I fight for a love
Knowing it can’t be won
Sent from a light above
Child of our golden Sun
Sari Gelin
I reach for hands
Knowing they can’t be held
Cursed by words I can’t tell
Broken under your spell
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin.
A beating drum
Searches on for your song
Echoes will carry on
Wondering where you’ve gone
Sari Gelin
Is that your voice
Caught in the mountain air?
Leading me to nowhere
Drifting in silent prayer
Sari Gelin
And like a rose
Turning in to thorns
My love was taken
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Saçın ucun hörməzlər Gülü sulu dərməzlər Sarı gəlin
Bu sevda nə sevdadır Səni mənə verməzlər Neynim aman, aman Neynim aman, aman Sarı gəlin
Back to the light above
What can I do, my love?
Child of our Golden Sun
Sari Gelin
